Go Huskers!
Enjoy the beatdown.

I was thinking that once in awhile it has been nice to do a little sports trash talking to mix it up. For instance, I love knowing that both Dr and me are jacked to see the Cowboys looking so horrible. If Ray were still around I’m sure he’d have a lot to say about his Steelers being so dominant in the absence of their star quarterback, who is about to return, and how that bodes well for their championship chances. Since I’m a Red Sox fan and Dr is a Twins guy, it’s no secret who we want to win that series. It’s also fun for a little extra spice when we get a showdown (week 13, Dr).
But since the Sox didn’t make the playoffs, the most important thing going right now is college football. Nebraska Cornhuskers football, to be exact.
Now I know not everyone loves the chosen team, so I am curious as to who else has support around these parts. Feel free to include an FBS and FCS team. For instance, there were a ton of SDSU fans in Lincoln the weekend before last sporting State jerseys and Husker hats, or some such combination. There’s no shame in that.
Are there any Minnesota fans? Would they admit it (which I would respect)? Other Big 12 fans? Perhaps Iowa State, Kansas, or the much hated Texas Longhorns?
Sometimes it’s just a nice reminder that we’re all people that have interests outside of politics and if we sat down for a beer we’re probably have a decent time debating the merits of Nebraska’s decision to enter the Big Ten (great call) or whether or not baseball should expand the use of instant replay (it should).
Here is a little taste of what redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez (T Magic) has in store for the country:
The Huskers have their first real test against an undefeated Kansas St. tomorrow in Manhattan. Snyder always has his boys ready, so it should give us a good feel where we are at (and whether or not that SDSU game was an anomaly). Let’s have a little contest. Closest to the correct score (of course with the right winner) can write a comment in this section and have it turned into a post. I prefer it be a sports-related comment, but whatever you want is welcome. Since I did this a little late, there probably won’t be too many participants, increasing your odds of success.
Who am I kidding? We all know I’m getting it right.
Nebraska – 41
Kansas St. – 10
You heard it here first, folks.
Enjoy the drubbing.

The Baseball Project is a side project with Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate, Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of R.E.M., and Linda Pitmon who once drummed for Zuzu’s Petals. I’m not familiar with all their work, but they contacted Craig Finn, of The Hold Steady (best bar band in America) to write and sing a song about his favorite and hometown team, the Minnesota Twins. The result is “Don’t Call Them Twinkies.” Since the Sox are done for this year, I’ll be a Twins guy until they’re done. So please don’t call them twinkies.
Enjoy Finn killing it for the Twins.

Glenn Beck hates the World Cup a lot, likely because the rest of the world hates it. Beck also draws some giant analogy with almost no thought put into it about how the World Cup represents Barack Obama’s policies. (If he means Barack Obama’s policies unite the world, I guess he sees that as a bad thing?) Beck also thinks America will reject the World Cup no matter how much it is forced down our throats. This facts, once again, have no impact on Beck’s ravings. World Cup coverage is breaking records with numbers of viewers. He also must really hate Rupert Murdoch for shoving soccer down our throats, what with Fox Soccer Channel and all. And those damned corporations advertising soccer apparently have been socialists all along.
Dan Gainor believes it must be a socialist plot because soccer is for the poor. He also claims our sporting events don’t devolve into riots. (Hmm, within the last week L.A. rioters burned a cab, Artest and team fighting the crowd, Michigan St. riots, the ten here, and on and on. Is he kidding?) He also claims soccer is being sold in America due to the “browning” of America. Seriously.
Some say soccer is being promoted by the left because they are uncomfortable with American exceptionalism (or something?). Gary Schmitt says soccer must be unAmerican because of some drivel about excellence prevailing in American sports and not in soccer (which is absolute garbage).
Others wonder why it’s being forced on us when we aren’t getting any better, though we’ve clearly improved a great deal and continue to do so. Look at the amount of youths that play soccer. It is growing.
I’m not the biggest soccer fan in the world, and for a good deal of time I would always say I hated soccer. Weird, right, since I’m a left-wing nutjob. But I hated it because I thought it was boring, not because of some strange conspiracy, or because it was scary and different. I’m really giving watching it a shot and I find that even the games not involving America are interesting. The score might be 1-0 but there are no shortage of near goals, great shots, great saves, or great crosses. And I realize it was hypocritical of me because I love a 1-0 baseball game and a 3-0 football game for many of the same reasons. The more America learns about the game the more it can appreciate and enjoy it, which is what is happening.
But back to the left-wing conspiracy garbage. These people are simply afraid of what is different. If something they don’t understand comes along, it must be dangerous. If the rest of the world (including allies and enemies) loves it, it must be horrible. Poor countries play it, it must be for poor people. Brown countries play it, it must be for brown people. The crap spewing from these peoples’ mouths is truly insane, and it makes me even happier to be enjoying the World Cup. I hope it’s a huge success and soccer continues to grow, just to make these crotchety old dudes uncomfortable. I can just picture the, “I hate change!” and “New things scare me!” cries emanating from various conservative news sources.
Enjoy the World Cup.

I hate soccer so anytime someone uses Lego’s to make fun of it, I have to show the world
Its about damn time. Super Bowl XLVIII will be played in an outdoor stadium in a cold weather city. Not only a cold weather city but probably one of the greatest cities on earth.
The Meadowlands will be the site for Super Bowl XLVIII and I couldn’t be
Football is meant to be played in the outdoors when the weather is below zero and there is three feet of snow on the ground. I applaud the NFL owners for reaching this decision and maybe we can move forward with Pittsburgh, Denver, Cincinnati, and Cleveland just to name a few…
Enjoy the game how God meant it for…
Recently, I was on a cruise to the Caribbean and two years ago I was on a different cruise to the other side of the Caribbean. I visited countries like St. Marteen, Honduras, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize, and Grand Cayman. At all times, we were told by the cruise lines (Carnival and Royal Caribbean) that we should always carry identification with us, whether that would be copies of our passport, the original passport, and our drivers license. Recently 3 colleagues went to the Ukraine on a business trip and they were told by IRX(the company sending them overseas) to have their passports in hand at all times. Why? Because at any time we could be asked for it and if we didn’t have it we would be sent packing.
Why should this be different in this country. If you are here illegally, you are breaking the law. Send you packing sir. If you want to be part of this country, learn our language and take the test (I know its not that simple). How much does it cost the American Taxpayer each year to have an illegal in this country b/c of things we pay for(unpaid medical care, ect).
It has caused huge unrest across the country from a warning from the state department on travels to Mexico to Major League Baseball threatening to pull the 2012 All-Star game from Phoenix if this law stays in affect.
This is what I tell the law-makers of Arizona: “Way to go and do not back down”
As for what the rest of the country things, take a look here and see what Business Week has in an article. You might be surprised what the poll they cited had to say….
Apparently Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland thought this was a good question to ask of Dallas Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant during a pre-draft interview.
Ireland has since apologized.
My question is what was Ireland thinking. He couldn’t have thought this would have been an acceptable question while conducting the interview. What do these types of questions have to do with what the player is going to do on the field. If I would have been Bryant, I may have gotten up and sent Ireland into next week. Despite what is in his mothers past, this totally crossed the line.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell needs to act. A fine, suspension, anything.
You have to see this video. ESPN has a show about sports science, and this one features Nebraska defensive tackle, Heisman finalist, and soon-to-be NFL draftee Ndamukong Suh.
I’ll let you watch the video to see how amazing he is. Just listen to how quickly he accelerates and how many pounds of force he hits with. It’s nuts.
Enjoy the Red Sox ruining Minnesota’s home opener.

Sports Rant of the Day: Tiger Woods. While what he did to his wife is terrible and I tend to lose any respect for a man that does that to his wife, it is none of our business. He doesn’t owe you an apology. The only people he needs to apologize to are his wife and kids and maybe his sponsors/endorsements. Remember, athletes are not to be role models…Tiger Woods owes you nothing
