This is pretty funny. Especially the debate between Oliver, Bee, and Mandvi. The first video covers the town halls and the media’s coverage of it. The second video has a death panel debate that is hilarious.

Here are a few quotes by Obama from a town hall on health care:
“For all the scare tactics out there, what is truly scary is if we do nothing.”
“Where we disagree, let’s disagree over things that are real, not these wild misrepresentations that don’t bear any resemblance to anything that’s actually being proposed.”
“I don’t think government bureaucrats should be meddling. But I also don’t think insurance company bureaucrats should be meddling.”
The article is worth a read. Obama discusses the “death panels” and some other concerns of skeptics.
Enjoy a civil discussion with a neighbor.

It appears that we have the first case of rendition under President Obama, and I’m not sure how I feel about it.
The person was suspected of contract fraud, which seems like an odd thing to go to this much trouble for. So right away it seems a little shaky.
But the person, Raymond Azar, was taken directly to a court to be tried. This is a definite step up from the Bush-era rendition, which included disappearing suspects to black sites and the use of the controversial interrogation techniques. So this seems good.
Then we see that Azar alleges coercion was used on him in order to gain a confession. If this is true, it is disheartening. Azar claims that his family was threatened, that he was malnourished and deprived of sleep.
While some of the more controversial tactics are not present, it is still troubling. Though this seems like a step in the right direction (though still an odd decision), Obama’s supporters expect more. Perhaps the allegations aren’t true, but it’s just difficult to believe that after so many years of being lied to.
Enjoy the upcoming Red Sox run.

Today’s song of the day comes courtesy of M. Ward. M. is one of my favorite artists, and the amazing song I’m presenting is “To Go Home,” which is the best Daniel Johnston cover ever. I’d be fibbing if I didn’t acknowledge that this choice is influenced by the fact that I’m going to see the living legend Daniel Johnston tomorrow, so I admit it. It’s no secret that Daniel’s genius is often better served by a cover, and M.’s cover of “To Go Home” is the absolute proof of that fact. This song gets me going like almost no other song can. “God it’s great to be alive. Takes the skin right off my hide, to think I’ll have to give it all up, some day.”
Gorgeous.
Enjoy a genius covering a genius.
