Is no longer!

The owner has decided to keep the place open. However the name has been changed.

The new name…Daddy’s Bar and Grill.

Aberdeen: Scotty’s is now Daddy’s

What has been a staple in the Aberdeen area has lost another piece of history.  It has been Scotty’s since the 50’s or 60’s.

It is just not going to be the same going in there when I order my Rebel Burger with Cheese, Corn Nuggets and frozen coke…,.yes I know a heart attack waiting to happen…

It’s too bad Scotty’s couldn’t make it. I loved the improvements they made to it a couple of years back. At first it seemed like a hit. I remember going in there and having to wait. But as time passed the crowds dwindled. I admit that I too went less and less as well.

The restaurant industry is really tough.

What’s more surprising is the Dairy Queen thing. I can’t imagine that location with so little seating staying in business without the Dairy Queen name and products, but who know…

    @ Ray.

It’ll be really hard for them if we get a new DQ on the east end of town. I wish them well (my favorite places to eat are usually always local), but like I said above, the restaurant industry is tough.

I realize the restaurant business is tough and I don’t wish to see them do poorly. I actually worked in restaurant management for a few years and I know all about the challenges in the industry, which is what I was saying in my comment. The fact is that moving DQ would be very expensive given land prices in that part of town and construction prices, but on the other side, they’ll lose the DQ name, promoting, product line, etc. Their current location is also very small from a seating perspective forcing them to rely heavily on drive-thru business and I would suggest that a drive-thru without a big name will be a challenge. I also wish them well and never said differently, I’m just being realistic and saying that I’m surprised.

John, I would also agree that my favorite places are many times local, but how many local places do you see in any town that are primarily drive-thru? Most local places thrive on dine-in regulars.

Didn’t mean to imply that you didn’t support them. I agree it will be a challenge. That is why I keep saying how tough it is.

I think the key thing for them will be quality. As long as they bang out great tasting treats and food, they will be fine operating a drive thru heavy establishment. I don’t think it being a drive thru will hurt it much. Aren’t all the coffee drive thru places local? They seem to be staying afloat somehow.

    Hopefully this place will too.

P.S. I still miss the mini golf course they had.

The mini golf was cool, too bad they got rid of it. You’re absolutely right about the quality being most important. That’s really the thing that makes or breaks a local place, it seems like if quality goes down they have a harder time fixing the reputation than a place with a name and tv ads. I don’t think we have enough really good local places in this town. Scotty’s was good, I kind of quit going because I honestly didn’t like the smoke, I’m sure the new place will be just as good, but I agree with Dr, it won’t be the same. I really like Sammy’s, but there again, not big on the smoking, awesome food though, way better than IHOP or Perkin’s and in my opinion probably our best local place for food quality and taste. The Flame seems hit and miss, one time it’s great, the next time not good at all. The Ward is very good, I’ve never had bad food there, but it’s too expensive. D’s isn’t anything special, it’s basically gas station food in my opinion.

It would be nice if the change to Bonn’s from DQ is used as an opportunity to define a specialty that will keep people coming, something out of the ordinary. If they try and compete with the same menu as Burger King or McDonalds they won’t have a chance, I’m hoping to see them find something that nobody else is doing and do it great, that’ll make them a big hit. It seems like the really great local places usually have a specialty, like Sammy’s with their omelets, nobody in town makes them like Sammy’s. Bonn’s needs something like a one of a kind sandwich or burger to really get people talking.
