For those more interested in facts than falsehoods and fear mongering, you may want to try out The Other 95%. The group has formed as a response to people that protest tax increases when they’ve actually received tax cuts. Here’s a paragraph from their page describing the group:

American politics have been hijacked by the noisy lies of the teaparty fringe. They complain about being taxed too much, but do they even know that 95% of Americans received a tax cut from Obama [1]. And this time the cuts didn’t go to just the super wealthy few [2] like they did under Bush, but to folks like us just trying to get by. We can’t let the tea partiers drown out the truth about Obama’s tax cuts. Instead, let’s make sure that Americans get the facts – not just the hype.

I suggest going to their site and checking it out. If you aren’t one of the 5%, you may enjoy it. Here’s a video of a sign proclaiming the facts in the center of a tea party rally. It’s an interesting juxtaposition of fearful, misinformed people with a sign right in the middle of them telling them why they’re wrong.

Enjoy it while it lasts, Twins fans.

I suspect that most people that show up at these tea parties are the working part of the 95% that are mentioned on the sign. You’d be hard pressed to find a top 5% person in the crowd. Now, I know that you believe these people to simply be some deluded soul; blinded by their populism. What I see are persons that on every other day of the week run their businesses, raise their families and generally provide the base from which the others draw. I am not terribly interested in the top 5% nor some vague reference to the other 95%. What you see at the tea parties are the group between the top 5% and the bottom 47%(you know, those that pay no income taxes at all). That would be a much better understanding of what’s really going on here.

There are 45% of tea partiers below that line. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2010/04/47-of-tea-partiers-pay-no-federal-income-taxes/38924/

And the rest of them still got tax cuts. So I don’t really get what your point is. Unless you mean to say they should have protested W.

Randy Thompson please hold your tongue you are making conservatives look bad.

For the rest of you, he is my situation and why I am so frustrated with taxes and government. I live in southern California and work two part-time jobs, one which depends on tips. I declare 100% of my income because I believe that is my civic responsibilty (unlike most tipped individuals). I am single and young. I made only 45k last year, but had 16k withheld for taxes and various welfare and social programs (i.e. SDI, FICA, etc). This 16k doesn’t include sales taxes, excise taxes, gas taxes, and increased costs from corporate and property taxes. I think it is fair say that I paid about 20-22k in taxes last year. How is that right? I don’t have enough money to afford this much government. Not to forget that it took me about 3 hours to go through all the tax software as well. This needs CHANGE!

Perhaps you should move to South Dakota.

I forgot to mention I did receive an Obama tax cut. It was for $400. Less than 1% of my income. When the Bush tax cuts I saw a reduction in my marginal rate from 28% to 25%, which is a little more than 10% in my taxes. I’m not rich, but the Bush tax cuts helped me. Bush tax cuts were based on income. Obama tax cuts were refundable, so people who paid no federal income received money. Why should I pay for that?

I was disappointed that Bush didn’t do anything to fix the intergenerational ponzi schemes we call Social Security and Medicare.

adam, you are right. California is beyond a mess and a total taxpayers nightmare!

So you got a tax cut on top of what Bush did, right?

And Cali has some work to do.

JJ is right. California is one of the worst states for taxes, but that doesn’t mean that the taxes we pay in SD are justified. It is also a very good point that the Obama “making work pay” credit was not income based. I would think that a left-leaning guy like you would be upset about that Adam.

Hi, Neat post. There is a problem with your site in internet explorer, may check this… IE still is the marketplace leader and a large section of other folks will leave out your wonderful writing due to this problem.

Should the Bush tax cuts end for those that make $1,000,000 per year and up?
