Democratic National Committee Executive Director Jennifer O’Malley recently said John Thune scares her. This is because he could be the most dangerous contender in 2012 (though I don’t think it’s as scary as the prospect of him actually being president). She went so far as to say he gives her nightmares.
O’Malley and others recognize that most of the possible GOP contenders are flawed, but she sees something in Thune that is threatening. I personally think he’s flawed, but when compared to Palin (lying quitter) and Romney (who implemented Obamacare before Obama was near the Oval Office), I guess it’s easy to stand out.
For some reason I think Newt Gingrich is scary, and he seems to want to run. The least scary thing in the world would be Palin winning the Republican Primary. The most scary thing in the world is that she has a chance to win the Republican Primary.
Enjoy the quick ramping up of the 2012 election in mid 2010.

What is wrong with Thune? What are his flaws? Are you still pissed that he took down a legend in 2004?
Do you really need to ask what I disagree with Thune on?
He won by opposing abortion, same-sex marriage, flag burning, and voicing strong support for the war in Iraq (largely because he’s an Evangelical Christian, which shapes his policy decisions). He continues to support tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of programs designed to help those at the bottom.
I guess my disagreements may be different than political flaws, which is what O’Malley what she is talking about. He’s not the dingbat Palin is and he isn’t open to the attacks Romney is and he has good hair, so I guess he may be better for the race.
And of course I’m still pissed he won.
You only have Tom to blame for the loss.
And thanks for clarifying flaws vs disagreement.
Palin is a dingbat.
If the election were TODAY…Thune could beat Obama.
Not a fan of Romney. I like Bobby Jindahl (sp) from La.
And yes, Thune has damn good hair
I have Bill Frist breaking tradition, Thune making it about non-issues, and a lack of foresight to blame. To think Daschle was beat largely for opposing George W. Bush’s policies. Do you think Thune could have won like that in 2008?
You like Jindahl? Seriously. Look up a little bit about him and see the absolute treasure chest of flaws.
“He continues to support tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of programs designed to help those at the bottom.”
Thune appropriatelysupports the Bush Tax cuts for all taxpayers. That’s a simple idea. And, just when have the democrats ever failed to get a program for the poor funded because of a lack of tax money. Just tack it onto the deficit. Sinple, too.
Nah, It starts with Daschle being in Virginia, signing his book that isn’t worth more than the TP in my bathroom, the eve before the vote on major energy legislation that would have had a major impact on South Dakota Farmers and the ethanol industry. Daschle played to his party rather that what was good for South Dakota. Legislation that ended up being passed after Daschle left office.
Daschle’s campaign lost the election for him. His strategy was terrible.
What are the non-issues speak of per say?
Yes, I like Bobby when compared to Palin. But of course, you are going to find flaws in any republican.
Its funny how the dems complain about Thune and his policies, but yet they will put up with him for another 6 years cause they couldn’t muster an opponent for him. That’s something Daschle cant even say!
Or you could keep the tax cut for the average citizen that Obama has and tax those that make the most off this system what they were ten years ago.
It was a mistake to go simply since it looked bad. But do you really think he didn’t know what others were doing and whether or not they would back down? The National Ethanol Board lamented the loss of Daschle in the Senate.
Non-issues like flag-burning and the Defense of Marriage Act.
Even Palin hasn’t claimed to have participated in an actual exorcism. She also doesn’t say she has cured cancer. http://theamericannews.net/election/?s=jindal&x=0&y=0
And I’m not happy we’re not running someone against him. It is important to get someone some name recognition, especially if Thune has other plans for 2012.
I am not sure what South Dakota Laws are but if Thune were to resign in 2012 b/c he won the presidency, would the Governor (Daugaard or Heidepriem) choose the person to fill the remainder of the term or would it be until an election could be held?
To continue on our discussion of 2012, look what politico has to say: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0710/40240.html
That seems right, but you want to build name recognition for the next race. Even if your candidate loses it can help for future races in various positions.
If he keeps hearing all this stuff it’ll be hard for him not to run.
We will have to wait and see. It will be interesting to see how a South Dakotan would fair in a presidential election.
A prediction if he would face Obama, Thune would win South Dakota. Something McGovern couldn’t do.
Don’t start badmouthing McGovern.
Oh where to begin on McGovern. Oh yeah, how did he do in ‘72 again?
You’re right, he certainly didn’t compromise himself nearly enough to win.
And you judge a man based strictly on election results?
You told me not to bad mouth him, so I won’t
Good. Comment on one of the other several posts so we can get another one going.
