There’s been a lot of talk about the health care summit set to take place on February 25. On the surface, it looks like an attempt to have a televised, public forum for Republicans to discuss their ideas with President Obama. A public conversation with Republicans seems like a good idea since there have been complaints about partisanship and closed door dealings (whether or not they are warranted is questionable).

But that’s the obvious/not paranoid way of looking at the health care summit. If you truly know what’s happening, you know it’s a secret trap being set by Obama to ruin Republicans. It will be accomplished by… um… getting them to openly state and discuss their ideas with President Obama with ample time to prepare? This hardly sounds like some killer trap, but guys like Lindsey Graham and John Boehner aren’t so sure.

I guess maybe they are just setting up an excuse. If it doesn’t go well, they can just claim they were trapped.

Jon Stewart has a nice little clip about the “trap,” and John Oliver also filed a report on health care. He was discussing government-mandated health care with some RNC folks attending their meeting in Hawaii. He had already discussed wasteful spending with them as they remained in the dark about the irony of having a ton of people fly to Hawaii to discuss wasteful spending, and they were no less in the dark when discussing Hawaii’s health care plan.

You see, since 1974 Hawaii has required employers to provide health care benefits for all employees working 20 hours a week. Everything in Hawaii is expensive, except health care, which is nearly the lowest in the country.

John Oliver hears the regular talking points from some RNC attendees and asks a few questions. They did not disappoint. I’ll let you watch Jon on the trap and John on Hawaii:

Senator Linsdsey Graham (R-SC) has been censured for working with Democrats on a climate change bill. Apparently he has ruined the party brand or something. I guess he can’t have his own opinions, he must blindly toe the party line.

Don’t we want our politicians to make decisions based on what’s best, not what your party wants? I’m negative on Lieberman, but he has completely sold out what he used to be. Graham is still the same guy, he just recognizes what the rest of the world does.

Also, if you look at climate change legislation as energy independence legislation, who could be against that? Why do we want to be dependent on others for our energy?

And for all they know Graham is working with them to try and weaken legislation he believes will pass with or without him. The Democrats have shown they will strip a bill of its power in order to get at least one Republican vote.

Enjoy the nice weather.

Finally, a Republican tells it like it is. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called ‘em as he saw ‘em. He calls the birther movement crazy, says Glenn Beck is a cynic and calls him out for crying, and also called out the people that think Obama is a secret Muslim.

I am no fan of Graham, but I like this sort of honesty. I liked it when Barney Frank did it, and I appreciate it from Graham. This is similar to why I like the quotes from tell-all books: you get a look at what a politician is actually like. I also like that Graham doesn’t try to ignore or quietly support these people. You don’t have to defend crazy.

In other Beck news, the White House busted Beck on several lies that recently appeared on his show. It would mean more if he didn’t love the attention.

But yeah, go Graham.

Enjoy the first and last time you’ll see that phrase.

Glenn Beck was upset about the soft questioning of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. But the questioning has not yet begun. There has only been opening statements. That’s right, opening statements. Isn’t there someone on that show with access to google or something? It’s difficult to see how no one there wasn’t like, “Um, Glenn, there hasn’t been any questions yet.”

You will notice none of the clips he shows involve any questions. When they were searching for these clips, didn’t anyone notice a distinct lack of questions? Perhaps that should have raised some flags.

And apparently Lindsey Graham is a worm for stating the obvious.

This may be obvious, and it may make me a worm, but Glenn Beck needs a better research team. Then again, if he researched most of the crap he says he couldn’t say it.

Enjoy an American League drubbing of the National League.
