President-elect Donald Trump keeps on racking up electoral votes even though he already surpassed the amount he needed to win the race to the White House.
The latest state to go red is Alaska. It’s three electoral votes brought Trump’s total to 295 on Wednesday evening, further adding to his lead in the Electoral College.
Trump continues a decades long trend of Republicans carrying the state in the presidential race.
When discussing Alaska, he has often cited his role while president in the passage of a 2017 tax law that called for oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Trump endorsed in Alaska’s other high-profile race this election cycle, backing Republican Nick Begich for U.S. House.
But it was another state — Wisconsin — that pushed him over the 270 he needed to secure the victory.
“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president — and your 45th president,” he said. “Every citizen, I will fight for you, your family and your future. Every single day I will be fighting for you, and with every breath in my body. I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. This will truly be the golden age of America.”
Harris later conceded to Trump. She addressed the nation late Wednesday afternoon.
“I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now — I get it. But we must accept the result of this election,” she said during a concession speech a her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington, D.C.
“While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign, the fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and for dignity of all people,” she added.
Harris said the results are not what she and her team fought for, but she claimed her “heart is full” and remains optimistic about the future of the nation. She said she is confident everyone — no matter how they voted in the election — loves the U.S.
“Hear me when I say the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting,” she added, also thanking her husband, Doug Emhoff, as well as President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, along with her running mate, Tim Walz, and his family.
She also acknowledged her staff, election officials, and poll workers and volunteers
“I thank you — I thank you all,” she said. “Look, I am so proud of the race we ran and the way we ran it.”
