President-elect Donald Trump claimed the White House again after hundreds of counties shifted to the right when the more than 149 million 2024 presidential election votes were tallied.
That’s just one of the findings you can explore in USA TODAY’s interactive, county-level look of how the nation’s voting shifted from the 2020 election. The maps also show the win margins of Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as well as voter turnout in each county.
America is somewhat purple
Harris’ and Trump’s campaigns received overwhelming support – 80% or more – in a combined 720 counties of the country’s nearly 3,000. That’s an increase of more than 200 counties from the 2020 election. The vast majority were on Trump’s side of the ledger. As of Nov. 15, just 14 of the bright blue counties, below, represent where Harris won more than 80% of the vote.

How counties shifted from 2020
In the 2024 election, Trump needed to shift many left-leaning counties toward the right. That didn’t mean he needed to win the county, he just needed to narrow the gap.
Take Nevada. Trump won the state that went to Joe Biden in 2020. His victory was aided by two counties that he still lost in 2024 because he cut into the 2020 margins:
◾ Washoe County: In 2024, the margin shifted from blue to red by 3.5 points toward Trump.
◾ Clark County: Trump cut the margin already red, gaining 6.8 points.
That’s why the map, below, is filled with more red arrows than the red counties you see in the map above. Trump didn’t win in some of the counties with red arrows, but he gained enough ground throughout the country to carry every swing state.
Voter turnout fell from 2020 election
This year, more than 149 million ballots have been counted as of Nov. 15. That’s about 7 million fewer votes than the 2020 presidential election. It’s important to note, though, that votes are still being counted.
Our analysis found vote totals fell in nearly every California county. The purple downward arrows in the map below show similar trends in Louisiana, Mississippi and much of the Midwest. In 2020, a similar map showed increases in voter turnout in nearly every state.
One of the biggest spikes in the map above shows the 47% increase in voter turnout in Loving County, Texas, a county Trump won. While overall turnout was down, vote totals rose in states that Trump flipped: Nevada, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Arizona was the only state that Trump flipped with a decline of about 234K votes.

With the President-elect Donald Trump winning the White House, a majority in the Senate, and a majority in the House, Republicans can control the legislative agenda – as they did in the first two years of Trump’s first term. See the balance of power here.
