Despite what was said about the Colorado football program over the last few weeks, the Buffaloes do not hate the American flag. They proved their love of country with some slick new lids on Saturday.
The uniform decision stemmed, in part, from a false narrative on the heels of Veterans Day.
Texas Tech holds its ‘Celebrate America’ game on the Saturday prior to the holiday every November. It always features a special game day t-shirt that is sold only by Red Raider Outfitter in Lubbock. All of the proceeds are donated to a a local initiative called ‘Monument of Courage,’ which helps give back to military veterans. This year’s game was against Colorado.
According to Stephen Spiegelberg, owner of Red Raider Outfitter, Texas Tech’s athletic department immediately approved this year’s t-shirt design request. Colorado reportedly responded back with just two words: “not interested.”
Spiegelberg went back to the drawing board and later reached back out with a new design. He was told no for a second time.
At that point, we pressed a little bit more, and we were told they won’t be licensing a product that had an American flag on it […]
We decided we would not be selling any type of Colorado merchandise in the store with the logo. We refuse to do that because Colorado would receive financial benefit from those shirts. And we don’t think that anybody has the right to limit the use of the American flag in this great nation.
— Stephen Spiegelberg
As a result of the repeated rejections, it was assumed that the Buffaloes hate American because they would not associate with the flag. A university spokesperson explained why that is not the case.
We get requests to use our marks and often decline for any number of reasons. In this case, the decision was unrelated to the ‘Celebrate America’ theme. Our standards are consistently applied and are based on widely accepted licensing and trademark best practices used by national and global brands.

Shedeur Sanders, who was cast as Benedict Arnold amid all of this drama, offered a fiery rebuttal to all of the chatter following Colorado’s 14-point win over Texas Tech last weekend. He and his teammates further shut down all of the accusations with their uniform for Saturday’s home game against Utah.
The Buffaloes proudly wore an American flag on their helmet decal.

It was Military Appreciation weekend in Boulder so the uniform was preplanned.

However, the poetic timing cannot be ignored. Deion Sanders’ Colorado program was dragged over the coals for hating the United States. They wore the American flag seven days later.
