Running a fleet of 20 Boeing 737s from six operating bases to 50 destinations efficiently is no mean feat, but when an airline can do that and consistently lead the nation in reliability and on-time performance, it is doing exceptionally well. US carrier Avelo Airlines announced on Thursday that it is leading the industry in operational reliability through the first eleven months of 2024.
Record-breaking passenger numbers for Avelo
Over the seven-day Thanksgiving travel period, Avelo Airlines (Avelo) carried a record-setting 125,000 passengers. On Sunday, December 1, it transported nearly 15,000 customers, marking Avelo’s busiest day since its launch in 2021. December is shaping up to be the airline’s busiest month on record, spurred on by flying more than 150,000 passengers on its Boeing 737s during the peak holiday travel period between December 20 and January 5, 2025.

Avelo Founder and CEO Andrew Levy said that as the airline enters the busy December holiday travel season, its customers can count on it to get them where they want to go on time and with their bags. He added that he understands few things are more frustrating to travelers—especially during the holidays—than long flight delays and cancellations.
“At Avelo, we understand this and have a shared passion across our team for uncompromising operational excellence. We look forward to welcoming aboard the 250,0000 customers flying with us this month and delivering the reliable, convenient and affordable travel experience that distinguishes Avelo.”

Consistently ranked Number 1 throughout 2024
Between January and November, 85.2% of Avelo’s flights arrived at their destinations within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time, which is the industry standard but seems more like how a doctor or pizza delivery person would measure being on time. Anyway, the Department of Transportation (DOT) stipulates this generous definition as the A14 standard punctuality metric in the airline industry.

Delta Air Lines ranked second with 82.1%, and United Airlines took third with 78.7%, but the industry average showed that only 76% of flights arrived within 15 minutes of when they should have. One can only wonder what that number would be if A14 actually measured on time as being the time of arrival, not within a quarter-hour grace period.

Avelo operated 1,371 scheduled flights last month.
Being late is one thing, but having no flight to catch is a far more significant issue, and on this aspect, Avelo is the clear leader, with just 0.45% of its flights canceled year-to-date. The closest rivals were Southwest Airlines, which canceled 0.85%, and Delta Air Lines, 1.16%, while the industry average was reported as 1.39% of flights.

Avelo operates its fleet of 20 Boeing 737NGs from six bases: Los Angeles Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley region’s Wilmington Airport (ILG), Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), the Bay Area’s Sonoma County Airport (STS) and Central Florida’s Lakeland International Airport (LAL).
Avelo is adding more new routes in 2025
Avelo is starting the holidays and winter travel season with the most routes and destinations in its short history. Since launching in 2021, the low-fare airline has carried more than six million customers on more than 46,000 flights, and today, it serves 50 destinations spanning 23 US states and Puerto Rico, as well as the three international destinations of Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Levy said:
“With the addition of these popular new routes and destinations, travelers have more choices on Avelo than ever. And with our everyday low fares, industry-leading reliability and unrivaled convenience, getting where you want to go has never been more affordable, easier and enjoyable.”
In November, Avelo debuted four new destinations, including its first two international destinations—Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ) and Cancun, Mexico (CUN)—and launched 16 new routes. This week, it announced that ten new routes will commence in early 2025, including a third international destination, Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.
