We’re excited to announce the Arkansas Times, with the help of Report for America, will add a new reporter in June who will focus on racial equity issues in Arkansas.
At a time when many corporations and other big institutions are dropping their efforts at diversity, we are committed to going the other direction, working to make the newsroom more reflective of the communities we cover. Our aim is to diversify our staff as we focus on deepening and diversifying our news coverage.
It’s more important than ever to take account of discrepancies in health, education, political power and economic opportunities among different races and ethnicities as we enter a second Trump presidency. Trump’s promised mass deportations of migrants are certain to upend families and businesses in Arkansas and elsewhere. Recent gerrymandering of Arkansas’s congressional districts spelled political disenfranchisement for Black voters in Pulaski County, and the full-scale implementation of universal “school choice” under the Arkansas LEARNS Act is certain to segregate classrooms further.
In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find an issue in the news in Arkansas where race does not factor in.
