A California-based tire company has recalled over 540,000 replacement tires mistakenly labeled as snow traction products, according to an announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The announcement was released Monday, noting that Prinx Chengshan Tire North America Inc. has recalled tires from both Fortune Tormenta and Prinx HiCountry.
The tires are labeled as snow tires but lack “sufficient traction to perform in all snow weather conditions,” the NHTSA said, and tires that lack the proper traction in snow can increase the risk of a crash.
A total of 541,632 tires may be impacted, the announcement read. A list of impacted tires can be found at www.static.nhtsa.gov.
Notification letters should be mailed to owners by Feb. 1.
Discovering the issue
According to a Safety Recall Report submitted Friday, PCTNA had discussions with its tire engineering department in June about the use of a snow symbol on tires.
The company realized tires tested to the European standard were not comparable to the American standard. The company then had to run the tires against the American standard using sample sizes.
By October, the company received final test results showing the sample sizes failed the American test. In November, engineers told PCTNA that the tires they tested in all sizes would likely fail the test.
The company decided on Dec. 3 that the tires were out of compliance and needed to be recalled.
The NHTSA said owners can contact the PCTNA customer service at 1-310-205-8355, extension 109.
They can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or 1-800-424-9153, or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
