After Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, he wasted no time sharing some of the policies he would bring to the White House in January. One of the most controversial is the threat of hefty tariffs on Canadian goods.
Trump offered a simple solution to the problem: Canada could join America as the 51st state. While many have dismissed this as a joke, others believe it could do more harm than good.
Canada has faced increasing political turmoil over the last few months. The country’s Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned from Parliament, sending Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government into a tailspin. Some provincial and territorial leaders are growing concerned about Canada’s ability to remain stable as Trump closes in on his second presidential term.
