High-powered EV charging network IONNA has recently received regulatory approvals in North America, thereby officially commencing its business operations. The network plans to deploy at least 30,000 chargers in the region, with the first charging stations expected to open in the U.S. this year, followed by Canada.
Announced in July last year, IONNA is the joint venture of seven of the world’s leading automakers, namely BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. The network has appointed Seth Cutler as its new CEO, who is said to bring immense experience in e-mobility and charging.
“I am honored to lead IONNA and work alongside these esteemed automakers in shaping the future of electric mobility. Our shared commitment to creating an extensive, high-powered charging network reflects our dedication to revolutionizing the entire EV charging experience and helping to drive widespread EV adoption”, said Seth Cutler.
The newly established charging network will be accessible to all EV with NACS or CCS connectors, and aims to provide a “seamless, vehicle-integrated, best-in-class charging experience”, with the integration of renewable energy sources.
Further, IONNA’s functions and services will facilitate seamless integration with participating automakers’ in-vehicle and in-app experiences, encompassing reservations, intelligent route planning and navigation, payment applications, transparent energy management, and additional features, it claims.
It is to be noted that General Motors and Mercedes-Benz are building their own charging networks as well in the region, although the companies have clarified that both the networks will co-exist without affecting each other’s strategies.
IONNA draws several similarities with Europe’s IONITY, which is was initiated back in 2017 by leading automakers BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi and Ford, later joined by Hyundai and Kia brands as well.
