Trump says he’s renaming Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’
President-elect Donald Trump told reporters he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
During a rambling press conference full of plans to annex Canada, the Panama Canal and Greenland and impose tariffs on Mexico, President-elect Trump said he would be renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America,” he said in a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. “What a beautiful name.”
Reactions were immediate.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene starts the process to rename the Gulf of Mexico
Immediately after the press conference, Trump ally Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene immediately posted on social media that she would propose a bill for the name change. Within a few hours she had a sparse bill ready, which she also posted.
“It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as,” she posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it.”
Most of the Gulf of Mexico is jointly managed by the United States, Mexico and Cuba.
President of Mexico disagrees
The name “Gulf of Mexico is internationally recognized, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday after Trump’s press conference, according to Reuters.
“I think they told President (elect) Trump wrong, they told him Felipe Calderon is still president,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference. “But no, in Mexico the people are in charge.”
Sheinbaum displayed a map of Mexico before portions of it became part of the United States. “Mexican America, that sounds nice,” she said.
Florida’s U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, others are onboard
U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, posted, “Come visit our beautiful district and take a dip in the Gulf of AMERICA!
Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Naples, simply posted video from the press conference and “THE GULF OF AMERICA #MakeTheAmericasGreatAgain.” Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Gainesville didn’t comment, but she reposted a post from Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson saying the name had a nice ring to it.
Other GOP politicians along the coast agreed, with Rep. Barry Moore, R-Alabama, saying he was proud to represent the state’s First District on the “beautiful GULF OF AMERICA” and Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville stating that “The Gulf of AMERICA sounds pretty good to me.”
Late-night comics have their say
Late-night hosts who spent years mocking Trump in and out of the White House greeted the announcement with resigned sarcasm.
On “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert said, “It’s gonna be a long four years.
“So now, if I understand this correctly, the Gulf of Mexico will become the Gulf of America. New Mexico will be Dry America and Cinco de Mayo will be the Fifth of Mayo,” he said.
“We have been so concerned about all the scary things Trump’s going to do,” said Desi Lydic on “The Daily Show.” “We forgot he’s also going to do some really stupid things.”
“We have almost two weeks of Joe Biden, but Trump is already reminding us of what a terrible mistake we made,” Jimmy Kimmel said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
“What a beautiful name you spent two seconds thinking of,” Kimmel said after running the clip of Trump’s press conference. “He still has no healthcare plan. Stayed up almost all night drinking diet Cokes to come up with the Gulf of America.
“This press conference showed that the real Gulf of America is the one between those who think Trump belongs in the White House and those who think he belongs in a home,” Kimmel said.
Social media reaction to ‘Gulf of America’ was about what you’d expect
Reaction online was, predictably, split among party lines, although even some of Trump’s supporters questioned his priorities.
