Grenada looks forward to continuously strengthening multi-faceted cooperation with China, Grenadian officials said on Tuesday at a bilateral forum for trade and investment, with Chinese enterprises also expressing willingness to explore the Grenada market.
“The relationship between Grenada and China is built on mutual respect, trust and shared aspirations. And the success of our bilateral relationship serves as a foundation for even greater collaboration in the future,” said Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell on Tuesday, when addressing the Grenada-China Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum. Mitchell is paying an official visit to China from January 11 to 17, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The forum is a practical and crucial platform to foster dialogue and advance common economic goals that can benefit both our peoples, said Mitchell.
Mitchell noted that Grenada has begun cooperation with China in areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, cultural exchanges and technology.
“Yesterday, we signed 13 cooperation agreements with the government of China. Many of them relate specifically to encouraging unimpeded trade, economic development and the growth of our respective business sectors. I urge my Grenadian team to make sure that when we come out of this forum, we will have strengthened the opportunities for continued approach and mutual development of our respective business sectors,” said Mitchell.
On Monday, China and Grenada signed multiple bilateral cooperation documents in areas including jointly building the Belt and Road, economy, trade, green development, culture, media and climate change, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Ren Hongbin, chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the organizer of the forum, said on Tuesday that the CCPIT signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Grenada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade & Export Development on Monday.
“The forum aims to implement the MoU and further promote practical cooperation between the two countries,” said Ren.
Ren proposed four sectors to further deepen China-Grenada economic and trade cooperation: agriculture, tourism, China-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) cooperation platform for the business community, and supply chains.
Ren also welcomed officials and businesses from Grenada to attend the CCPIT-initiated 18th China-LAC Business Summit, which is held annually by China and LAC countries in rotation. The 2025 session will be held in Zhengzhou, Central China’s Henan Province.
“Our economy’s pillar industries are mainly tourism and agriculture. Therefore, there are investment opportunities in tourism, agriculture, hospitality services, education, wellness and technology,” Ian Marshall, the Ambassador of Grenada to China, said on Tuesday at the forum, while introducing investment opportunities in Grenada to Chinese enterprises.
Marshall also pointed out investment opportunities in new energy, such as solar power and wind power, as well as in infrastructure, such as the construction of a new airport in Grenada.
“Our company primarily focuses on aviation tourism, so we are exploring Grenada to see if there are opportunities to develop air trip products for businesspeople, tourists and students,” He Peng, key account manager at Beijing-based Huaxin Business Travel Co, told the Global Times on Tuesday on the sidelines of the forum. He focused on Grenada’s development plan for the next five years to seek cooperation.
Marshall said that Grenada is visa-free for Chinese citizens. The country will also promote more flights to Grenada for tourism and trade. “We also plan to encourage foreign direct investment. For example, many of the projects introduced are open to foreign entrepreneurs for direct investment.”
A representative from a Chinese engineering company, who declined to be identified, told the Global Times that the company is looking for opportunities to participate in Grenada’s infrastructure construction plan, such as the new airport mentioned during the forum.
“China has already been the key partner in various large-scale infrastructure projects in Grenada. We are pursuing a range of major infrastructure enhancement projects in various sectors, including ports, hospitals and roads, and we welcome the opportunities that this provides to Chinese companies to partner with us,” said Mitchell.
The year 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Grenada. The visit of the prime minister of Grenada also marks the first visit to China by a foreign head of state in 2025.
“It is a moment to reflect on our shared journey, the achievements we have realized together and a promising future that lies ahead,” Mitchell noted.
