Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano downplayed the buzz around Lionel Messi’s bold celebration after his goal against Club América last Saturday, instead pointing to longstanding tensions between Liga MX teams and Argentinians.

The drama unfolded at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where Messi scored in the 34th minute and taunted the Club América crowd with a “3-0” hand gesture—an unmistakable nod to Argentina’s three World Cup victories compared to Mexico’s zero.
When asked about the incident, Mascherano brushed it off. “No, the truth is that I have not spoken to Leo, so I have not given it more importance,” he said during a press conference on Tuesday.
The coach went on to highlight a history of hostility between Mexican teams and Argentinians, particularly in the wake of Argentina’s World Cup triumph.
“I think that we have more important issues to deal with, yes and logically I have had to play against Mexican teams and against the Mexican national team, we know that they are usually hostile towards us Argentines and well I think that also after the World Cup that wound is still open,” Mascherano added.
