Washington, Feb 6 (EFE).- United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth released a video on Thursday of the first flight of migrants apprehended on US soil, sent to the Guantanamo US naval base in Cuba.
US President Donald Trump “has taken swift action to expel them immediately from our county, and our nation’s finest are helping lead the way in this critical mission,” Hegseth posted on X with a video of the flight.
“These criminals trampled over our previously wide open border to bring violence and mayhem to our communities,” Hegseth added.
The video shows the military aircraft and some of the detainees on the plane uniformed with a grey tracksuit, shackled, and escorted at all times by military and other security personnel.
On Wednesday, the White House said that the first group of 10 migrants who left the border city of El Paso on Tuesday on a military plane were allegedly “members” of the Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua.
Trump plans to install 30,000 beds at the naval base to temporarily house undocumented migrants before deporting them to their home country, according to the US presidency.
“Venezuela also agreed to accept the return of illegal alien Tren de Aragua gang members,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday.
The Republican administration reported that the first flight arrived at the detention center, but the Pentagon official’s images are the first to be published.
When Trump signed the memorandum to expand the capacity of the detention center at Guantánamo, he said the move was to detain the “worst criminal aliens” who pose a threat to the American people.
Under US law, living in the country without permission or legal status is a civil, not a criminal offense. Therefore, it is untrue that undocumented people have a “criminal record,” as the current administration has claimed.
The new administration has launched a campaign against the more than 11 million undocumented migrants in the country, calling them “criminals” and promising to carry out the biggest deportation campaign in US history.
US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is expected to travel to Guantánamo on Friday to visit the facility, a cabinet official confirmed to the Miami Herald. EFE
