JOSIAH HILLS and Christopher Khan advanced to the singles and doubles semi-finals of the Copa Guatemala Junior Tennis Tournament, on Tuesday.
However, their Trinidad and Tobago compatriots Oliver Harrigan and Cherdine Sylvestger were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage of the COTECC (Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation)-sanctioned 14 & under competition.
After saving six match points to get into the tiebreak in the third and final set, Hills, ranked fourth in COTECC, went on to take the “sudden death” by seven points to three in his 6-2, 1-6, 7/6 victory over top-ranked COTECC player Mateo Gutierrez of El Salvador.
Khan defeated Mexican Leonardo Martinez 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to book his place in yesterday’s last four.
Sylvester and Harrigan were denied semifinal places by Mexicans. The latter was far from disgraced in his 6-4, 7-5 defeat by David Llovera, while Maria Martinez dismissed Sylvester 6-4, 6-1.
Second seeds Hills and Khan were in tremendous form as they marched past a pair of Guatemalans 6-1, 6-1 in the doubles quarters. Sylvester and Cyra Ramcharan, also seeded second, also came up against Guatemalans in the quarters and were edged 4-6, 7-5, 10/5.
