STORY: :: The U.S. deports 119 migrants of different
nationalities to Panama on first of three flights

President of Panama
“Through a cooperation program with the United States government, required by them, requested by them, yesterday a U.S. Air Force flight arrived at Howard airport with 119 people of the most diverse nationalities in the world.”
“Nationals from places like China, of course, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and all of the ‘stans’ that reach there. The point is to leave the United States. There is no clear majority from any place. They are not many. The first flight carried 119 and it is expected that once the other two flights are completed, we will reach a number of about 360 people.”
“They are temporarily staying in a local hotel and from there are transported to a sort of shelter we have in San Vicente, in Darien, and we hope to get them out of there as soon as possible through flights from the United States. This is another contribution that Panama makes on the migration issue with the collaboration of the international NGO that controls these issues, which is the International Organization for Migration.”
The first flight from the U.S., carrying people from Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, arrived on Wednesday February 12, and two more will land soon, Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino said at a press conference. In total the U.S. will send Panama 360 people on the three flights.
Before being returned to their respective countries, the deportees will be transferred to a shelter near the Darien – the jungle separating Central America from South America which countless migrants traverse in a bid to reach the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
