Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus earned the Seal of Excelencia for 2024-27 and ranked third for social mobility in WSJ’s 2025 Best Colleges list.
One California university topped multiple Ivy League schools for being the second most selective in America, according to an analysis by The Business Journals.
Stanford University was ranked second in the nation for its selectivity, with an average acceptance rate of 3.9% in 2023. The Business Journals used U.S. Department of Education data to rank schools with at least 3,000 applications for fall 2023.
The Northern California school had an average matriculation rate of 80.9% in 2023. Of the 2,099 people that Stanford University accepted, 1,699 people ultimately enrolled at the university. That’s out of the 53,733 total applicants the university received.
The most selective school in America is Harvard University, The Business Journals found.

Applicants for fall 2025 to the University of California system can expect to receive their admission decisions between March 1-31, according to the UC system’s website.
Admissions for California State University schools vary a bit. For example, San Diego State University said online that its admission decisions for first year and transfer applicants for fall 2025 are emailed to students in the spring. California State University, Long Beach said online that its undergraduate admission decisions for fall 2025 will be made mid-February through April. Applicants for the fall semester for California State University, Northridge can expect an admissions decision as early as mid-March, according to the school’s website.
