Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is calling for a peaceful and celebratory atmosphere ahead of Sunday’s Copa America final, following recent incidents of violence involving players and fans. The last-four match between Colombia and Uruguay saw clashes erupt after Colombia’s 1-0 victory in Charlotte, North Carolina, with Uruguay players engaging in altercations with opposition supporters in the stands.
Scaloni, looking ahead to Argentina’s clash against Colombia at Miami Gardens’ Hard Rock Stadium, emphasized the importance of a harmonious event. “I hope the fans can enjoy themselves, I sincerely wish for that. Besides the joy of winning the title, it would be a pleasure for everyone if the final concludes peacefully,” Scaloni expressed during a press conference on Saturday.
Regarding the altercation involving Uruguay players, Scaloni expressed empathy, acknowledging the distress caused when family members are caught in such situations. “We expect players to set a positive example, but in such circumstances, reactions can be difficult to predict. I hope incidents like these are not repeated. Witnessing your loved ones amidst such chaos must be deeply distressing,” he remarked.
Looking ahead to the final, Scaloni addressed the retirement plans of forward Angel Di Maria, highlighting that the decision to play him would depend on what is best for the team. “Even though it may be his final match, our primary consideration remains the team’s needs. Whether he plays or not will be decided accordingly,” Scaloni clarified.
Argentina, who secured a 2-0 victory over Canada in the semi-finals, aims to continue their successful run in recent finals, having clinched the 2021 Copa America, the Intercontinental Cup against European champions Italy in 2022, and the World Cup in Qatar against France. Scaloni emphasized the significance of the upcoming final, noting the intensity and stakes involved. “Every final has its own unique challenges. We will approach it with determination to win. Every team understands the significance and pressure that comes with a final,” Scaloni concluded.
