Frank Torres-Lopez, 27, of Katy, Texas, United States used to be a fugitive hiding in Puerto Rico. At around 3:00 a.m. on August 1, 2021, he fatally shot Juan Matute-Figueroa, 42, outside the Los Compadres Bar in Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, USA.
After the shooting, Torres-Lopez fled to Puerto Rico. Why he shot Matute-Figueroa is still unclear.
In Puerto Rico, Torres-Lopez dyed his hair orange. With a false alias, he obtained a fake Puerto Rican identification.
On September 29, 2021, U.S. Marshals arrested Torres-Lopez in Puerto Rico. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
In December 2022, Torres-Lopez pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, hindering apprehension and weapons offenses. On February 24, 2023, Torres-Lopez was sentenced to 25 years in the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.
Formerly known as Trenton State Prison, the New Jersey State Prison opened in 1836. It is the oldest prison in New Jersey and one of the oldest correctional facilities in the U.S.
