Japan, South Korea and the United States of America (USA) signed a memorandum on defense relations in response to North Korea’s nuclear threats.
“With this, our cooperation has become stronger and will not yield even in the face of changed international circumstances,” said Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara.
After a meeting with US and South Korean counterparts Lloyd Austin and Shin Won Sik in Tokyo on July 28, Kihara announced that the memorandum of understanding had entered into force and provided for the exchange of information on North Korean missiles and other security challenges in the region.
An official Tokyo statement said the three ministers expressed serious concern “over the growing military and economic cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, while pledging to deter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.”
Previously, at a meeting in Tokyo, the defense chiefs of the three countries discussed further strengthening their position in improving the command and control of American forces and strengthening the production of missiles under American license in Japan.
The next trilateral meeting of ministers will be held in South Korea in 2025.
