Dominica’s Kalinago territory has elected its first female chief.
The election held yesterday saw Anette Sanford, a registered nurse, poll 693 votes, with her closest rival receiving 272.
The Kalinago are believed to have originally come from South America and represent the last remaining tribe of the pre-Columbian Carib Indians, going back to about 3000 B.C.
