The Polestar 3 is the first of the brand’s models to be manufactured in the US. The first American Polestar manufacturing process has just started at Camp Hall in Ridgeville, where Volvo also builds the EX90 five-seat SUV.
Polestar kicked off the production of its SUV, the mid-size 3 crossover SUV, in South Carolina. It is not only the first model of the brand to be produced in the US, but also the first to be produced on two continents. The other factory that has been building the Polestar 3 since February is located in Chengdu, China.
The cars that roll off the production line in South Carolina will be sold across the US but will also be exported to Europe. The automaker believes it has an ace up its sleeve in a market where everyone wants crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks.
Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s CEO, labels the Polestar 3 as “the best-looking and best-driving SUV in the market today.” Best-looking or not, the sales figures will tell.
The company will also build the Polestar 4 compact crossover outside China. The model will see the light of day in South Korea starting from the middle of 2025.
The Polestar 3 is Volvo’s EX90’s siblingThe 3 is the brand’s first model to sit on the newly developed SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture) all-electric platform that it shares with the Volvo models, such as the XC60 and XC90 SUVs, the S60 and S90 sedans, or the V60 and V90 wagons, while it is the Polestar-branded sibling of the Volvo EX90.
However, their specs are different. While the Volvo EX90 is a seven-seater, the Polestar 3 is offered exclusively as a five-seater. Both are powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors, one sitting at the front, while the other one engages the rear wheels in an all-wheel drive setup.
The motors generate 402 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque in the Volvo, while the Polestar benefits from the presence of 489 horsepower and 620 pound-feet, channelled to all four wheels via a single-speed automatic transmission.
Both of them are equipped with the high-capacity nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack with a capacity of 111 kWh, which stores enough energy for an EPA-estimated range of 315 miles in the Polestar and 300 miles in the Volvo.
The weight should be at fault for the range gap between the two. While the seven-seater weighs 6,213 pounds (2,818 kilograms), the five-seater tips the scales at 5,697 pounds (2,584 kilograms).
All the similarities indicate one thing: the two models will roll off the same production line at the South Carolina plant in the United States. The EX90 starts at $81,290, excluding taxes and fees, while the Polestar 3 will set up back $73,400.
