Arizona State forces 3 turnovers in win over Wyoming to start 2024
All offseason, coach Kenny Dillingham preached getting turnovers. Forty seconds into the season’s first game, the defense produced its first one.
The Arizona State football team’s 48-7 win over Wyoming turned heads Saturday.
And it elevated the Sun Devils in college football polls and rankings.
USA TODAY Sports ranks every Football Bowl Subdivision team each week, and Kenny Dillingham’s team is now ranked No. 56 in the country.
That is a 49-spot jump from where the site had the team before Week 1.
It is the second-highest jump in the ranking, with Vanderbilt, a 34-27 winner over Virginia Tech, jumping 50 spots to No. 68.
Not bad for one week.
ASU dominated Wyoming in its season opener at Mountain America Stadium, only allowing a late touchdown to the Cowboys, who fell 27 spots to No. 77 in the USA TODAY ranking, compiled by Paul Myerberg.

Arizona State rises in Big 12 football rankings
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal elevated the Sun Devils one spot in its Big 12 football power rankings to No. 13 after the win over Wyoming.
Don Williams wrote: “Defense was most encouraging part of a 48-7 rout of Wyoming, considering Sun Devils allowed 49 or more three times last November.”
247 Sports put ASU football at No. 12 in its latest Big 12 power rankings, up two spots.
Cody Nagel wrote: “Arizona State made a statement in the opener. The Sun Devils were favored by less than a touchdown against Wyoming, but dominated in a 48-7 win Saturday night. The defense nearly posted a shutout before the Cowboys finally got on the board with two seconds remaining. Arizona State gained almost 500 yards with 241 rushing.”
Almost perfect: Grading Arizona State football’s 2024 season opening win over Wyoming
Heartland College Sports, which compiles its Big 12 power rankings based solely on how teams have looked in recent performances, had the Sun Devils at No. 3 in the conference.
Yes, No. 3.
Pete Mundo wrote: “Arizona State was the surprise of the week in the Big 12. They nearly shut out Wyoming, who they were only favored to beat by a touchdown, and did it with an explosive offense and defense. I don’t want to overreact to Week 1, but they deserve this slot because we’ve only played one game, and guess what, the Sun Devils looked as good as anyone against decent competition.”
