Havana, Sept 11 (ACN) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel recalled the 1980 murder in New York of Cuban diplomat Feliz Garcia at the hands of US-based terrorists.
In his X account, the head of state and top Communist Party leader wrote that the murder of Garcia was executed by members of the terrorist group “Omega 7, who orchestrated violent actions against the island for decades under the protection of US authorities.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez also used his X platform to condemn the terrorist action carried out on US territory 44 years ago.
Rodriguez said that Garcia’s legacy is present in the actions of revolutionary diplomacy against the promoters of hatred and terrorism against the Cuban people.
Diplomat Felix Garcia joined the Cuban Foreign Ministry in 1968; he was appointed member of the Cuban permanent mission at the United Nations in 1978.
At the Cuban mission, Garcia was in charge of administrative issues and also provided special attention to the students at the Cuban school in the area, who would call him “Uncle Felix.”
The Cuban diplomat was shot several times at a red traffic light from a silenced Mac-10 machine gun becoming the first foreign representative accredited at the UN to have been murdered in the United States.
According to FBI reports, some hours after Garcia was murdered, Cuban terrorist named Pedro Remon phoned New York-based media outlets to claim responsibility for the action on behalf of the Omega 7 organization. Despite Remon’s large terrorist records, he was never accused until the mid 1980s. lc
