TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Earth is home to a wide range of climates, spreading across countries, with some experiencing extreme dryness while others wetter with high levels of precipitation.
From South America to Asia, the countries mentioned below are among the wettest out of 192 states. Citing Visual Capitalist, here are the 10 rainiest countries in the world.
10 Rainiest Countries in the World
1. Colombia
Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia is known for its diverse ecosystems and distinct climates across the country. Although 86% of the region experiences hot climates, Colombia is recognized as the rainiest country in the world.
Areas like the Pacific coast and the Andean interior are considered the wettest parts of Colombia, where average annual precipitation can reach up to 3,240 mm due to elevation changes. In contrast, the northern and southwestern regions are much drier.
2. São Tomé & Príncipe
As one of the wettest countries, São Tomé & Príncipe has an average yearly precipitation of 3,200 mm. Nestled on the coast of West Africa, the islands are known for their pleasant tropical climate, characterized by warm and humid conditions.
However, São Tomé & Príncipe’s rainy seasons typically last for nine months, from September to May, bringing torrential downpours and tropical storms.
3. Papua New Guinea
Renowned for its rich flora and fauna, Papua New Guinea is among the rainiest countries in the world. With an average annual precipitation exceeding 3,142 mm, the Highlands sees a nearly year-round rainy season. Additionally, the country’s seasons are determined by precipitation rather than temperature. It is influenced by two major wind systems—the southeast trade winds and the northwesterly turbulence zone—along with factors such as latitude, elevation, and exposure.
4. Solomon Islands
Situated in the southwest Pacific Ocean, the Solomon Islands rank among the countries with the highest rainfall, with an average annual precipitation of 3,028 mm. During the rainy season, from November to April, most parts of the islands experience approximately 70% of the total annual rainfall. Additionally, some areas in the southern islands experience the wettest conditions between June and September.
5. Panama
Another tropical country, Panama enjoys a pleasantly warm climate for most of the year. However, it is also known as one of the rainiest countries in the world, with the wet season lasting from May to December. During this time, Panama’s humidity increases, with overcast weather persisting throughout the rainy period. With an average annual precipitation of 2,928 mm, rainfall rarely occurs throughout the day but in bursts that last a few hours, ranging from drizzles to intense showers.
6. Costa Rica
With an average annual precipitation of 2,926 mm, Costa Rica ranks among the wettest countries in the world. The rainy season lasting from May to December can vary across different regions due to Costa Rica’s geographical landscape. In areas like Quepos, precipitation is much higher than in Puntarenas. Meanwhile, the Caribbean Coast experiences downpours year-round, and San José enjoys a temperate climate.
7. Samoa
The small island of Samoa is known for its tropical climate, which boasts high levels of rainfall and humidity. The average annual precipitation can reach up to 2,880 mm, with about 70% happening between November and February. Despite this, the country’s temperature remains fairly constant, ranging from 24 to 32 degrees Celsius. During the rainy season, expect regular rainfall that can last from just a few minutes to all day, along with the possibility of tropical storms.
8. Malaysia
Located in Southeast Asia, Malaysia’s average annual precipitation is 2,875 mm. Most of the year, the country experiences hot weather with high humidity levels. Despite the country’s distinct seasons—wet and dry—it is near impossible to define the boundaries, affected by the hilly equatorial area.
In fact, the timing for each season is distinct across the west and east coasts. The west coast experiences its wet season from April to October, while the east coast from November to March.
9. Brunei Darussalam
Another Southeast Asian country, Brunei Darussalam, is popular for its high standard of living. Having a tropical climate, the country boasts an average annual precipitation of 2,722 mm. For almost 9 months of the year, Brunei has up to a 50% chance of rainy days. Most notably, November stands out as the peak of the wet season, given an average rainfall of around 20.8 days. However, the rain typically occurs in short bursts of torrential showers.
10. Indonesia
Ranked last in the list of rainiest countries in the world, Indonesia experiences dry and wet seasons, with an average precipitation of 2,702 mm yearly. Despite having the wet season from November to April, different regions in Indonesia may experience varying climates during this time due to its diverse topography and geographical landscape.
Additionally, the country reaches its wetter state during La Niña events, which involve periodic cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific.
