The first thing I noticed about Charlene’s Bar and Grill was the huge Harris sign hanging outside.
As I walked in I bumped into the owner, James McKinney.
“Trump would be a dog without a leash… he might not even be a dog with a leash, he might be a dog with rabies,” he told me as we sat at the bar and chatted about the election.
He explained that if Donald Trump was elected, he wouldn’t have to worry about being re-elected because it would be his second term.
US presidents can only serve two terms in total.
“Everything he wants to do and get, he would have to do in these four years… he’s not going to be worried about the people, he’s going to be worried about himself,” he adds.
“To me, this is an election of common sense.
“The rest of the world is looking at us, is this who we want them to see, Donald Trump? He does not represent the highest percentage of American.”
Asked what his message for Ms Harris would be, Mr McKinney laughed and shouted: “As the Raiders say: ‘Just win baby’.”
US would be ‘headed for civil war’ under Trump
Outside the restaurant, Michelle Brown is enjoying a drink and a cigarette, donning her best Kamala Harris shirt.
The dental hygienist is a born and bred Washingtonian, and proud to be a graduate from Howard University like the vice president.
She says she wants an “honest, hard-working person that tells the truth” in charge.
“I’m voting for Harris not because she is woman, not because she is a Black woman or a Howard University alumni, but I think she is the best person for the job,” the 56-year-old adds.
At the top of her list of priorities is “home issues”, healthcare and America’s standing on the world stage.
She says people of colour are “under attack”, many can’t afford healthcare, and the US is “not as strong in the eyes of people around the world”.
“We are known as leaders of the world and that can absolutely only be restored with Kamala Harris,” she adds.
Stressing the importance of voting, Ms Brown says she has no doubt Ms Harris will win the popular vote – but people in important states need to vote strategically.
She tells me she is worried what sort of America she would live in if Mr Trump was elected.
“It would be an angry country, a country that does not lead world wide, a divided country, a country in complete chaos, a country that is headed for civil war,” she says.
“We are vulnerable and him being the leader would absolutely mean the ruin of what this country is known for and what we have stood for.
“Boy, if I could just jump ship if he becomes the president, I’m out, I’m gone.”
She tells Ms Harris to win and “keep winning with class and style”.
Referring to the Democratic candidate’s signature pearl necklace, Ms Brown says she carries pearls in her pocket.
“She is the president for the people whether you vote for her, whether you agree with her, or you don’t, she has your back. She doesn’t know how to do anything but have your back.
“Cheers to you, Kamala.”
