Olympic Peninsula to British Columbia Walking & Hiking Tour with Backroads

Backroads

You don’t need to fly off to the four corners of the globe to discover a new walking trip. Not when North America offers an endless array of extraordinary hiking and walking journeys. From Alaska to Arizona, a wilderness trail in Western Maine to the shores of Puget Sound and Lake Superior, here are five new walking tours for 2025.

Olympic Peninsula to British Columbia Walking & Hiking Tour

The Northwest offers a remarkably scenic combo of ocean and forest. This trip is an immersion in both, with the added benefit of Victoria, one of Canada’s most charming cities. Offered by Backroads, it explores waterways and forest trails on the magical Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island. The Olympic Peninsula to British Columbia Walking & Hiking Tour offers the chance to watch seabirds, whales, and other marine life by shore and sea, on ferries, in kayaks, and from waterfront hotels. There’s a ferry trip from Washington to Victoria, B.C., on the Black Ball Ferry Line. This 6-day trip is rated Levels 1-3 /5 and priced from $4,599 per person.

Maine Hiking – 100-Mile Wilderness with REI

REI
Maine Hiking – 100-Mile Wilderness

REI has crafted a new trip into Maine’s storied 100-mile Wilderness, the name given to the next-to-last section of the Appalachian trail on its 2,180-mile route from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Katahdin in Maine. It encompasses a 750,000-acre expanse of forests and mountains, lakes and ponds, and rivers and streams. The Wabanaki have been at home in the terrain for thousands of years, and Henry David Thoreau made three trips to these woods in the 19th century, climbing mountains and paddling a canoe. His journeys became the subject of his book, In The Maine Woods. Featuring a series of day hikes, Maine Hiking – 100-Mile Wilderness offers hiking on some sections of the Appalachian trail alongside pristine lakes and streams and along a deep river gorge with many scenic waterfalls. Accommodation is in cabins at two Appalachian Mountain Club lodges, Medawisla Lodge and Gorman Chairback Lodge, perched on the banks of beautiful and pristine ponds. This six-day trip is rated 3/5, priced at $3,799 for REI Members and $4,169 for non-members.

Classic Alaska Backpacking Adventure with Wildland Trekking

Wildland Trekking
Classic Alaska Backpacking Adventure

An unforgettable backpacking adventure from Wildland Trekking, the Classic Alaska Backpacking Adventure traverses an alpine ridge with dramatic views of the surrounding Alaskan wilderness and the famous Alaska Range. Known to Athabaskans as ‘The Ancient One,’ this trail is said to offer better views of Denali than any other trail in Alaska. At 20,310 feet, Denali is North America’s tallest mountain. While it’s often cloud-shrouded, trekkers may still get glimpses of the peak on this hike. This is a trek across rugged tundra alongside wild lakes and rivers amidst the vast expanses of wilderness that define Alaska. Rated 4/5, this five-day trip requires carrying a backpack weighing 35 to 45 pounds, with elevations of up to 2,500 feet and distances of up to eight miles per day. Priced from $2235 per person, with a maximum of six guests per trip.

Minnesota’s Superior Hiking Trail with REI.

REI
Minnesota’s Superior Hiking Trail

Minnesota’s Superior Hiking Trail from REI focuses on Minnesota’s North Shore along Lake Superior. It’s a landscape of dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and dense forests, a tourist destination for many hikers. REI has cherry-picked the highlights of the 310-mile Superior Hiking Trail, with long walks through pine forests and staggering views of Lake Superior’s endless beauty. The walk goes from Bean Lake to Bear Lake and explores the Kadunce and Cascade River Trails, as well as the Gooseberry Falls Loop, with views of some of the best waterfalls in the area. This trip is lodge-based and rated 3/5. Trip members should be capable of hiking up to 10 miles while carrying a daypack that weighs 10-15 pounds on trails with elevation gains/losses of up to 1,500 feet. The five-day trip is $2,899 for REI Members and $3,189 for non-members.

Arizona & Utah Hiking with MT Sobek.

Their Arizona & Utah Hiking with Premier Lodging Tour is filled with off-the-beaten-path hikes that include a secret sandstone canyon outside Zion National Park, the hoodoos and multi-hued striations of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, and even an on Lake Powell. The trip goes to Horseshoe Bend and Monument Valley on Navajo land, as well as Newspaper Rock and Canyonlands’ Needles. The accommodation is in luxurious glamping accommodations and private cabins.
