UNESCO World Heritage Centre is pleased to announce that the user-friendly version of the World Heritage Regional Action Plan for Europe and North America (2024-2031), endorsed by the World Heritage Committee during its 46th session in New Delhi (2024), is now available and ready to use! This user-friendly version will facilitate general ownership of the Regional Action Plan and integration into the region’s day-to-day efforts to implement the World Heritage Convention, in an integrated way with the States Parties’ planning programmes.
The 2024-2031 Regional Action Plan has been developed based on the outcomes of the Third Cycle of Periodic Reports submitted by the 51 States Parties in the region. It is the result of a collaborative process between States Parties, the Advisory Bodies to the World Heritage Committee (ICOMOS, ICCROM and IUCN) and UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
The Regional Action Plan for Europe and North America outlines five key strategic objectives designed to address the most pressing challenges facing World Heritage sites in the region and provides a roadmap to ensure their continued protection, conservation, and sustainable management.
While the Regional Action Plan provides a framework for action, its success relies on the active engagement of all stakeholders involved in the management and protection of World Heritage sites. Countries in the region are invited to develop (or update where they already exist) national action plans that identify the actions that are most relevant to them and the level of priority that can be given to each of them, according to sub-national or local priorities, contexts and capacities. This Regional Action Plan provides a structured yet flexible approach, empowering stakeholders at all levels to take concrete action and ensure the safeguarding of World Heritage properties for present and future generations.
The UNESCO World Heritage Centre reiterates its gratitude to the Governments of Germany and Ireland for their decisive support to the Third Cycle of Periodic Reporting in Europe and North America.
The Third Cycle Report for Europe and North America and the full version of its Regional Action Plan, including monitoring indicators are available here.
