Amazon announced it has replaced the majority of its plastic air pillow packaging with paper filler for its North American deliveries. The global online retailer said the effort is part of a larger goal to remove plastic delivery packaging by the end of the year.
“We’re constantly inventing and thinking big to make our packaging small,” Amazon wrote in a statement last week. “We want to ensure that customers receive their items undamaged, while using as little packaging as possible to avoid waste, and prioritizing recyclable materials.”
The company said it has already removed 95 percent of its plastic air pillows from delivery packaging, the largest plastic packaging reduction effort in North America. The move will save nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.

“I’m proud of the cross-Amazon collaboration to make a positive impact on the customer delivery experience with easier to recycle materials. It’s a great example of how we thoughtfully test and scale new solutions to protect our customer experience,” Pat Lindner, vice president of mechatronics and sustainable packaging, said in a statement. “We are working towards full removal in North America by end of year and will continue to innovate, test, and scale in order to prioritize curbside recyclable materials.”
This Prime Day, July 16 to 17, Amazon said nearly all of its customer deliveries won’t contain plastic air pillows. After testing the paper filler, the company said it offered “the same, if not better, protection to products than plastic air pillows.” The filler paper is also curbside recyclable.
“I’m so excited we’re changing over to paper. It’s not only easier to work with, but the machinery gives us more space so it’s easier to pack orders,” Christian Garcia, fulfillment associate at an Amazon fulfillment center in Bakersfield, California, said in a statement.
