Edgnex teams with Proen to invest US$962m in Thai data centres

UAE-based Edgnex Data Centres by DAMAC says it has formed a joint venture with Thai ISP Proen Corp to invest over THB32 billion baht (US$962 million) in several data centre development projects in Thailand.

The JV – which will be 70% owned by Edgnex – aims to build carrier-neutral Tier-III data centres with a combined capacity of 20MW. Under the first phase of the venture, Edgnex and Proen will establish a 5MW facility that is scheduled to be operational in early 2025.

The tie-up with Proen is Edgnex’s second data centre project in Thailand, following its announcement in June that it will build a two-building data centre campus in Bangkok, with each facility designed for a capacity of 10MW. The first phase is set to be operational by 2026.

“With this announcement, we substantially commit to the Thailand market, outlining a pipeline of approximately 100 MW of future data centre capacity,” DAMAC co-founder Hussain Sajwani said in a statement issued Friday. “We are committed to supporting Thailand’s growing digital economy and providing the necessary infrastructure for modern AI-driven businesses.”

The Proen JV is also the latest move by Edgnex to expand its presence in Southeast Asia, which kicked off in October 2023 with a plan to invest MYR250 million (US$58.1 million) in a new data centre in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. In May this year, Edgnex announced plans to invest in its first data centre in Indonesia.

Thailand’s deputy PM and Minister of Digital Economy and Society Prasert Chantararuangthong said the JV will help the government achieve its plans to develop the country into a major digital player in Southeast Asia.

“This investment will enhance Thailand’s data processing capabilities, support the growth of digital businesses, and attract investors from around the world,” he said at the JV press conference. “It will also create new opportunities for Thais in terms of jobs and businesses.”
