Trending Torrents: The Most Pirated Content Of 2023
Last Updated: September 27, 2024
Torrenting has existed for as long as the internet itself.
Individuals are consistently searching for methods to view their favorite films and TV shows without paying for numerous subscription services.
Currently, there are hundreds of popular torrenting sites, such as The Pirate Bay, LimeTorrents, and uTorrent.
Nonetheless, the situation is not entirely positive.
According to a report from the US Chamber of Commerce in 2019, the piracy of TV shows and movies costs the industry between $29 billion and $71 billion annually.
This battle against piracy drives up consumer product prices as companies expend millions on anti-piracy measures.
Pirated content illustrates which aspects of pop culture have enjoyed immense popularity over the past year and demonstrates the lengths individuals will go to in order to access their favorite films, shows, and artists.
While sales figures indicate content popularity, what measures do people take to watch these offerings online for free?
At EarthWeb, our data specialists aimed to uncover the most pirated content on the internet in 2023.
We analyzed torrent pages across various categories, including top movies, games, TV shows, software, audiobooks, and albums of the year.
Key Findings
The Barbie movie tops the list as the most pirated content of 2023, with 4,190,000 pages of torrent content.
Among TV shows, the anime One Piece is leading in piracy with 444,000 pages of illegal content.
Renowned Canadian rapper Drake ranks as the most pirated music artist in 2023, accumulating 303,000 pages, while Doja Cat’s album Scarlet leads as the most pirated album with 13,300 pages.
The most pirated video game this year is Spider-Man 2, featuring 136,000 pages of illegal content.
The most pirated software globally in 2023 is Microsoft Office, with 291,000 pages of torrent material available online.
The top pirated audiobook is Spare, Prince Harry’s memoir, totaling 193,000 pages of illegal content.
The Most Pirated Movies of 2023
Film piracy appears to be on the rise, exhibiting a 36% increase in illicit film consumption from 2021 to 2022, as reported by the research firm Muso.
Given the plethora of high-profile blockbuster releases in 2023, these trends are expected to continue.
This year, the “Barbie” movie not only emerged as the most pirated film but also as the most pirated content overall, boasting over 4 million pages of torrents available.
The film, centered around female empowerment, was highly awaited and shattered box office records, earning over 1.4 billion dollars globally.
Hence, it is not surprising that many internet users are seeking ways to watch it free of charge online.
In second place is the film adaptation of the well-known horror game “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which has 131,000 pages of pirated content.
This movie has drawn mixed reviews, noted for having one of the largest rating differences on Rotten Tomatoes.
The primary audience for the movie consists largely of teenagers, who are inherently online-savvy due to their prior engagement with the game, likely contributing to its significant piracy rates.

The Most Pirated TV Shows of 2023
A study conducted in 2022 by the piracy-focused research firm Muso revealed that illegal streaming was responsible for 46.3% of global piracy traffic.
With numerous streaming platforms holding exclusive rights to different content, it’s not surprising that many consumers find it challenging to subscribe to all of them.
Leading the pack, the much-anticipated Netflix adaptation of the hit anime, “One Piece,” has been identified as the most pirated TV show of 2023.
With 444,000 pages of pirated content available online, it significantly outpaces the other premieres of the year.
During its inaugural week, it achieved an impressive 18.5 million streams and secured a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show’s existing large and devoted fanbase contributed greatly to its success as an adaptation.
Coming in second, “The Last of Us” TV series, which had many gaming enthusiasts eagerly anticipating its release, features 86,000 pages of illegally torrented content.
This unconventional zombie horror series captivated audiences with its profoundly emotional third episode, showcasing the love story between two side characters, Bill and Frank, who fall for each other while navigating the apocalypse.

Music piracy appears to have existed for ages, from burning CDs to platforms like Napster that enabled users to share copyrighted music.
A study conducted by IFPI indicates that over one-third of music listeners still engage in music piracy, with the primary reasons being cost and the convenience of downloading illegally compared to official channels.
The most pirated album of 2023 is “Scarlet” by Doja Cat, which has 13,300 pages of illegal content available.
It achieved significant success, reaching number 4 on the US Billboard 200, and the lead single “Paint the Town Red” marked Doja Cat’s first solo number-one on the US Billboard Hot 100, the UK Singles Chart, the Billboard Global 200, among others.
In second place is Travis Scott’s “UTOPIA,” with 9,840 pages of illicit content.
Despite 2023 being a slow year for rap albums on the Billboard charts, Travis Scott’s album debuted at number one, earning 496,000 album-equivalent units.
Notably, all 19 tracks from the album made their debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
Ice Spice, popular on TikTok, has her album “Like…?” released in January 2023, resulting in 8,550 pages of pirated content circulating online.

The Most Pirated Music Artists of 2023
There has always been a challenging dynamic between music artists and the piracy of their works, particularly concerning album leaks prior to their official release.
Yet, it’s widely acknowledged that streaming platforms such as Spotify and Tidal have revolutionized this landscape, significantly reducing the number of music fans who feel compelled to resort to piracy.
This doesn’t imply that piracy has ceased to exist, however.
Leading the unfortunate chart is Drake, positioned as the most pirated music artist, with more than 300,000 web pages dedicated to pirated content featuring his work.
Despite his immense popularity, this same acclaim unfortunately enhances the risk of widespread piracy.
Back in 2011, his album “Take Care” experienced a leak just a week before its official launch, leading him to express to Billboard, “I look forward to leaks — knock on wood.
Probably I shouldn’t, but I do.
Like I said, if it’s a reasonable leak, I look forward to it.”
In the second position, BTS claims a spot with 297,000 pages containing pirated material all over the internet.
Music enthusiasts often don’t alwayssupport for their favorite artists is often lacking in money, which could explain why the music of BTS has experienced such extensive torrented activity.

In an interesting note, Taylor Swift holds the 9th position with merely 189,000 pages of pirated content, even though she has emerged as the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2023.
One might assume she would be the most pirated artist considering her extensive fan base and the success of her record-breaking tours, but it seems that her fans have played a role in preventing this phenomenon.
Swift’s loyal fanbase is known for its respect towards her music, having previously reported pirated content like the release of the Reputation album in 2017, as detailed by Billboard.
The Most Pirated Video Games of 2023
Games undeniably represent one of the most heavily pirated types of content on the internet.
While watching a movie may only require a Netflix subscription and purchasing an album costs around $15, games can be priced at $60 or more, making them a significantly higher value commodity.
The title of the most pirated game in 2023 is claimed by “Spider-Man 2,” which swiftly became the fastest-sellingvideo game that has made history for PlayStation, achieving sales of 2.5 million copies (both physical and digital) within its first 25 hours.
There are 136,000 pages of pirated material circulating online related to the game, illustrating the public’s strong desire to access the most talked-about game of the year without any payment.
In terms of illegal downloads, “Resident Evil 4” is not far behind, racking up 112,000 pages of unlawful torrents.
Initially launched for the GameCube back in 2005, the game has been remastered for modern gaming systems and is currently available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Most Pirated Software of 2023
The cost of software can be quite high for organizations, leading employees to resort to illegal torrenting as a means of reducing expenses.
Nevertheless, this scenario exposes businesses to the risks of potential malware attacks.
According to a 2018 BSA Global Software Survey regarding online piracy, it was found that unlicensed software comprised 16% of the software on personal computers in the USA, resulting in significant losses.
The software industry is valued at $9.5 billion.
Our data indicates that Microsoft Office is the top pirated software of 2023, with 291,000 pages available online.
With over 1.4 million individuals utilizing Microsoft products or services, this software is essential for numerous businesses and users alike.
Nonetheless, the illegal downloading of the software has resulted in data breaches, notably when a Ukrainian utility company compromised its systems by installing a pirated version of Microsoft Office obtained from a torrent site.
Similarly, the graphics editor Adobe Photoshop, favored by photographers and designers across the globe, ranks as the second most pirated software, with 187,000 pages of pirated content found online.
Adobe’s products feature prominently in the remaining top 10, with Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and the full Creative Cloud occupying notable positions.

The Most Pirated Audiobooks of 2023
Piracy of books is prevalent in numerous nations.
The Publishers Association released a report indicating that in Italy, book piracy was assessed to cost approximately $856.7 million, leading to the loss of over 5,400 job opportunities.
According to the Egyptian Publishers Union, in 2018, piracy was determined to incur an annual loss of $16.8 million for publishers in Egypt, while the UK’s Intellectual Property Office discovered in 2017 that pirated ebooks comprised 17% of all ebooks consumed during that period.
Globally, there’s a widespread interest in reading and enjoying the latest bestsellers, yet it appears more frequent that individuals opt to download books online rather than visiting a store to purchase a physical copy.
This trend extends to audiobooks as well. Our research uncovered hundreds of thousands of websites providing free torrent content.
Not surprisingly, the most pirated audiobook of 2023 is the sensational memoir by Prince Harry.
With 193,000 pages of pirated material, “Spare” has outstripped all other audiobooks released this year, as Prince Harry revealed intimate details to the public, shedding light on the British royal family.
The book garnered significant praise and swiftly achieved the status of the fastest-selling adult nonfiction print book since 2004.

How Much Does Pirated Content Increase Costs for Industries?
One of the primary motivations behind content piracy is the lack of financial resources among individuals.
This phenomenon is especially prevalent among teenagers who often lack the financial independence to purchase every game or movie they desire.
As a consequence, industries find themselves bearing the significant financial losses attributed to this issue.
Taking the gaming industry as an example, the average cost of a game in the U.S. is $69.99, and there are at least 536,424 pages featuring illegally torrented gaming content available online.
This suggests that the gaming industry might incur a loss of approximately $37,544,315 this year alone if someone downloads a game from each one of those pages.
In a similar vein, the television industry is poised to suffer significant financial losses due to piracy in the current year.
According to Forbes, over 50% of streamers register for a streaming service intending to watch only a specific show.
Currently, there are around 1,062,646 pages of illegal torrent content online pertaining to television programs released this year.
Given that a Netflix subscription costs $6.99, if an individual opts to view one of the illegal torrents rather than subscribing, the platform risks a loss of $7,427,895.
Applying this same methodology to films, where 4,849,023 web pages of illegal content exist, using the same Netflix subscription cost of $6.99, the platform could potentially lose $33,894,670 globally due to film piracy.
Though these figures are rough approximations, they highlight the challenges specific industries face in safeguarding their content from piracy.
Methodology
To determine the most pirated content of 2023, we first compiled a seed list of movies, TV shows, games, audiobooks, and albums released during the year, together with popular software and music artists.
Next, we used Google to search for each item of content combined with the term “torrent” to guarantee that the search results contained pages that referenced both words explicitly.
We also ensured that the results included only web pages published from January 1 to December 7.
Subsequently, we recorded the number of pages on Google for each of these search terms. With this data, we ranked them by category.
The data collection took place in December 2023.
