Antigua & Barbuda Readies Launch of Its Second International Airport

Antigua & Barbuda Readies Launch of Its Second International Airport

Antigua & Barbuda is ready to open a new international airport which is expected to significantly boost the country’s tourism industry.

The Burton-Nibbs International Airport (a state-of-the-art facility) is located on the island of Barbuda and set to replace the existing Barbuda Codrington Airport.

The new airport cost US$55 million and is scheduled to launch commercial operations on October 3, 2024.

The development of the airport marks a significant milestone for Antigua & Barbuda. This will be the country’s second international airport, joining the VC Bird International Airport in St. John’s.

To ensure a seamless transition, the Barbuda Codrington Airport will be closed at sunset on October 2, 2024. The new airport will then officially open at sunrise the following day.

The project has involved substantial upgrades, including the construction of a 7,100-foot runway. The government has invested over US$14 million in the airport’s development, which also encompasses ongoing training programs for fire service personnel, airport staff and other key personnel.

The airport’s namesakes, Burton and Nibbs, were prominent figures in Antigua & Barbuda’s political history. They served as Members of Parliament representing Barbuda and played a crucial role in shaping the country’s constitution during the Lancaster House conference in 1980.
