New American Airlines captain flies home to Antigua and Barbuda | Island Life

Bernal Simon returned to his native Antigua and Barbuda in grand style, landing an American Airlines plane at the V.C. Bird International Airport, with his hometown flag flying from the cockpit’s window.

He, of course, received a hero’s welcome.

“Antigua and Barbuda proudly welcomed one of its own, Capt. Bernal Simon, as he returned home for the first time in his new role as an American Airlines captain. The momentous landing took place earlier this month at V.C. Bird International Airport, where Capt. Simon was greeted with a celebratory water cannon salute on the arrival of American Airlines Flight 2378 from New York,” according to a statement from the Caribbean Tourism Organization on behalf of the island’s Tourism Authority.

Further, it noted that “in a gesture of national pride, Simon flew the Antigua and Barbuda flag from the cockpit window…” and that among those on site to witness the event were his parents, Nelson and Bernita Simon.

Local dignitaries who gathered in the airport’s VIP lounge to celebrate Simon’s achievement included Charles Fernandez, minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment; Colin C. James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority; Joseph Samuel, acting CEO of Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority, as well as other tourism and airport officials, family, and friends.

Fernandez led well-wishers congratulating the pilot.

“It is a proud moment for all of Antigua and Barbuda to witness one of our very own rising to the position of Captain within the airline industry. Captain Simon’s inaugural flight should inspire all youth who aspire to a similar career path,” he said.

According to the statement, with a 20-year aviation career, Simon was promoted to captain with American Airlines on May 16, 2024.

At the V.C. Bird Airport, Simon took time to briefly reflect on the journey that led to his inaugural landing in his hometown.

“I am deeply thankful to American Airlines for the opportunities they have provided and for believing in me throughout my journey,” he said to well-wishers. “During all my years spent with American, I’m proof that a little child growing up in the Caribbean with a dream of aviation and aspirations of taking flight has only one thing limiting them: The sky.”

Simon also shared his personal priorities, saying that “In my career, my primary goals and milestones revolve around maintaining good health, spending quality time with my family, and enjoying life to the fullest.”

“These priorities guide my decisions and aspirations, ensuring a balanced and fulfilling professional and personal life,” he said. “Finally, I carry immense pride for Antigua and Barbuda, my beautiful island home that has shaped me into the person and pilot I am today.”

Simon’s return to Antigua and Barbuda not only marks a personal achievement, but also serves as inspiration for the nation, highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of its people on the global stage, the release stated.
