A new plant study in Rapa Nui has uncovered evidence of contact between early Polynesian settlers and South America.
According to researchers from the Academy of Christian Humanism University in Chile, starch grains analysed from stone tools gathered from the site of an early settlement on the remote island are derived from foods indigenous to South America.
The study highlights the question of whether early Polynesian navigators reached the Americas.
“Signs say why not … why would they have stopped travelling once they reached Hawai’i and Rapanui?” said lead researcher Professor Andrea Seelenfreund.
