The 2024 Copa América has ended with Uruguay winning the third-place game over Canada on Saturday and Argentina winning the tournament over Colombia on Sunday. Did you miss any of the action? Here’s a recap of the action.
Uruguay 2-2 Canada (4-3 on penalties)
Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte was in the starting 11 for La Celeste as they looked to end this tournament on a positive note. As for Canada, they counted on Olympique de Marseille newcomer Ismaël Koné and LOSC Lille’s Jonathan David.
Marcelo Bielsa and his team would open the scoring in the eighth minute thanks to a goal from Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur. Koné would respond minutes later, scoring a bicycle kick-style goal in the 22nd minute to level the scoring.
The contest remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 80th minute when David scored to give Canada the 2-1 advantage. The Canadians had to maintain this lead for a few minutes to achieve the surprising upset, but the Concacaf side ended up heartbroken.
Inter Miami striker Luis Suárez scored in stoppage time to snatch the victory away from Canada and force a penalty kick shootout. Koné and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies missed their two penalty kick shots while Uruguay converted all four of their shots to secure the win and third place.
Argentina 1-0 Colombia
Lionel Scaloni counted on former PSG standouts Ángel Di María and Lionel Messi for Argentina’s starting 11 while Colombia had former AS Monaco star James Rodríguez in their lineup.
Both teams could not produce a goal in the 90 minutes as the reigning Copa América champions also had to play without Messi after he was substituted in the 66th minute. Argentina recorded seven total shots while the Colombians had 14 total shots, but after a scoreless contest, the match went into extra time.
After a scoreless first half of extra time, Argentina would breakthrough in the second half of extra time with former PSG player Giovani Lo Celso providing the assist on the goal from Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez in the 112th minute as Argentina secured a 1-0 win and lifted their second consecutive Copa América trophy.
