Argentina’s Federal Police have dismantled a suspected terrorist cell planning attacks on the Jewish community in Mendoza, according to the National Security Ministry. The group has been described as an ‘Islamist terrorist organization’.
This development is significant as Argentina has Latin America’s largest Jewish population. Previous attacks, such as the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center which killed 85 people and the 1992 Israeli embassy attack resulting in 22 deaths, highlight the gravity of this threat.
President Javier Milei, a strong supporter of the Jewish community and Israel, has vowed to strengthen national intelligence to prevent future attacks. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich emphasized the government’s commitment to combating these threats. Seven suspects have been arrested, and multiple raids have resulted in the seizure of weapons and electronic devices.
