Copa America: Argentina vs. Colombia. Tickets, watch parties

Tickets are going for $1,600 to $8,000, the list of watch parties keeps growing, and South Florida is awash in bright yellow, sky blue and white as the national soccer teams of Colombia and Argentina prepare to play the Copa America final on Sunday night at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

This would be a huge game no matter where it was being held, but it is especially momentous in this market, home to 250,000 Colombian immigrants and 60,000 Argentinean immigrants. West Kendall, Doral and Weston have a large concentration of Colombians and North Beach is nicknamed Little Buenos Aires.

According to Pew Research, 31 percent of the Colombians living in the United States and 23 percent of the Argentineans live in Florida. Most are in South Florida, with other large pockets in the Tampa and Orlando areas.

Both countries boast famously passionate soccer fans who have been on display throughout the Copa America as La Albiceleste (the Argentine sky blue and white) and Los Cafeteros (the Colombian coffeemakers) made their way to the championship match.

According to data from StubHub, ticket buyers for the final are coming from 55 countries. U.S. buyers lead demand, accounting for 75 percent of tickets sold. Of the 25 percent of tickets sold to buyers outside of the U.S., 31 percent were from Argentina, 20 percent from Colombia and nine percent from Mexico.

Argentina and Colombia matches have been the biggest draw throughout the tournament. Five of the top seven best-selling games on StubHub involved Argentina and the other two involved Colombia.

Adding to the intrigue is Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, the 37-year-old Argentine captain, World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. Sunday’s game (8 p.m., Fox, Univision) will likely be his final Copa America appearance.

“Copa America matches featuring Argentina have been the hottest ticket for U.S. buyers throughout the tournament, so naturally demand is high to see Messi play in Miami for his country in the final,” said Adam Budelli, spokesperson for StubHub. “When he joined Inter Miami last season, sales for the club on StubHub increased nearly 28 times.”

Argentina is the defending Copa America champion while resurgent Colombia, led by captain James Rodriguez, is riding a 28-game unbeaten streak and has not played in a Copa final since 2001. Colombian singer songwriter Shakira will perform at halftime, adding to the event’s Latin flavor.

Anticipating a lot of first-time visitors to Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, Miami Dade County officials released a list of tips for guests who may not be used to the oppressive summer weather or the stadium’s many rules

Included on the list are reminders to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and be aware of signs of heat stroke. The list also explains that the stadium prohibits fireworks, flares, explosives, ammunition, or any other incendiary devices, air horns, whistles, noisemakers, alcohol, glass bottles, cans, coolers, thermoses, ice chests and purses larger than 12 inches by 2 inches by 12 inches (30.4 cm by 5.08 cm, by 30.4 cm).
