When she calls in from rehearsals, Argentine superstar Emilia is about to kick off four nights at Estadio Vélez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires. Just moments before, she learned she’d sold out three of the shows — no small feat for a 50,000-person stadium. “It’s wild,” she tells Teen Vogue. “My fans are incredible. Doing something like this in my country, I’ve always dreamed of it, but I never thought it would happen so quickly.”
Emilia is no stranger to drawing a crowd. In April, the 27-year-old embarked on her 2000s-inspired .mp3 Tour with 10 sold-out shows at Buenos Aires’ Movistar Arena. Since then, she’s packed venues across Europe and Latin America with fans of all ages, many of whom don one rhinestone under each eye to emulate her signature look. As the lights dim each night, Emilia gives her all in over two hours of live vocals and intense choreography. The tour’s official Instagram account chronicles every high-energy production, profiling concert-goers and those who bring the spectacle to life.

Before each show, Emilia engages in tried-and-true rituals like vocal exercises and drinking tea, but where some artists might prioritize hair and makeup touch-ups until the end, she takes a different path to feel her best. When asked how she spends her final minutes before going onstage, Emilia immediately responds: “I listen to ‘Eye of the Tiger.’ I watched the Rocky movies before my first [.mp3 Tour] show, and they motivated me. It’s such an inspiring story.”

The shows are as physically demanding as they look, so much so that Emilia started training as far back as February to build stamina. “When the tour started, I realized if I hadn’t stepped up and prepared so much, I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” she explains. Who among us can execute Step Up-caliber moves in feathery, high-heeled boots? “I love the challenges this tour has given me. I’ve set goals for myself: If I can’t do this now, I’m going to be able to do it tomorrow. I’m going to give it everything I have until I can do it. I’m pretty demanding of myself,” Emilia confesses between laughs.
Emilia first entered the Latin music scene in 2016 when she became the lead singer of Uruguayan band Rumbai. Six years later, her debut solo album, ¿Tú crees en mí?, launched her career into the stratosphere. Her personal style quickly became as beloved as her voice, with fans marveling at her ability to transform from girly-girl to femme-punk rockera with the change of an outfit. “I love being intentional about my clothes, onstage and in my everyday life,” she says. Even Emilia’s rehearsal looks boast a healthy dose of glam. “I’ve been this way since I was little,” she confesses, which makes sense for someone who got her start through modeling gigs as a teen.

In 2023, Emilia’s momentum accelerated with star-studded collaborations and singles from her sophomore project, .mp3, which she released in its entirety that November. Its Y2K dance-pop sound harkens back to early hits from Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Shakira, whom Emilia names as some of her favorite “pop divas.” The 13-track LP earned the singer her first Latin Grammy nomination, in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album.
“My previous album is beautiful, but it doesn’t have a super developed concept behind it the way .mp3 does,” Emilia says. “In its totality, .mp3 is an album with a specific sound, goal, and stories. I’m so proud of all the growth and progress, which I’ve obviously only achieved with the help of people who have worked with me to turn my ideas into reality.”

According to Emilia, visuals have been equally important in creating the world of .mp3. A teaser for the album flashes through a dreamy Y2K bedroom, complete with a lava lamp and novelty M&M’s alarm clock, and pans to the singer, who waltzes across its pink carpet in Converse XXHi-Tops. “I’m involved in every detail of my shows, my videos, everything,” she says. “Honestly, I leave my mark on every detail.” Emilia’s meticulous nature paid off at her Vélez shows, where she debuted a glittery, flash drive-shaped staircase, astronomical sums of confetti, and a massive, airborne .mp3 player that doubled as her throne.
With her onstage fashion, Emilia takes the .mp3 Tour’s early-aughts sensibilities to new heights. She and stylist Dav Martens dreamt up a fresh take on 2000s glitz, brought to life with custom looks from designers like DEFAÏENCE and Poster Girl.
“For the Vélez shows, I’m wearing completely new outfits, and they’re spectacular,” she gushes. In her first two shows at the stadium, Emilia unveiled five jaw-dropping looks: A feathery beige and blue set, a Juicy Couture-esque tracksuit, a white and silver one-piece, a purple chainmail top and skirt, and a strappy jumpsuit reminiscent of Selena Quintanilla. Each was embellished with enough rhinestones to be seen from every seat in the stadium, and accented with matching gloves.

“I love emitting a certain sensuality, not just through my songs and choreography, but through my outfits,” Emilia says. Between allover embellishments and textured accents, each garment is more intricate than the next. Fans channel her extravagance with their own over-the-top looks, and the star can’t get enough. “In Mexico, I wore a new look, and the next day, a girl came to my show wearing the exact same outfit, down to the rhinestones,” she shares. “I love seeing how the looks inspire the young people at my shows to create their own universe and tell their own stories. That energy can help them in day-to-day life.”
At her first Estadio Vélez performance, Emilia premiered her latest single, “noviogangsta ,” dedicated to her longtime boyfriend, Argentine rapper Duki. Its fusion of Cuban cha-cha-chá and Argentine trap is a departure from .mp3 but perfectly represents Emilia’s innovative spirit. “These are genres I’ve always listened to, and I thought it would be interesting to explore, to amplify the Latin story around them in a new era,” she says.

The .mp3 Tour draws to a close on December 14, and Emilia’s gaze is already on the next objective: Putting her country on the world stage. “I’m doing something exploring the character of the Latina and showing the world more of Argentina,” she says, “so our culture can become known globally, and so people can see where I come from and get to know our story. There are so many stories to tell, and I’m giving myself that responsibility with so much respect, love, and pride.”
But first, she’ll take the advice of countless fans and come to Brazil. “I’m going on vacation there — I’m going to drink some caipirinhas,” she laughs. Knowing Emilia, she’ll head there with under-eye gems and an iPod Classic in tow.
