Argentina wrapped up a perfect group stage at the Copa América last night with a 2-0 win over Peru in Miami, with Lautaro Martínez notching a second-half brace for the defending World Cup (and Copa) champions, who have yet to concede a goal at this year’s tournament.
Lautaro’s second goal was set up by a hoof forward from Enzo Fernández, who came off the bench about halfway through the second half. Argentina rested and rotated quite a few players for this game, including Lionel Messi. Presumably Enzo will be set to start their quarterfinal matchup against the runners-up in Group B, who could very well turn out to be Ecuador (Caicedo & Kendry & Co play their final group game, against Mexico, tonight).
Earlier in the day, back over in Europe, Euro 2024 resumed with the first two Round of 16 matchups, which saw Switzerland eliminate a highly disappointing Italian side and Germany take care of business against Denmark — both by a 2-0 scoreline.
Germany’s win had a touch of luck and controversy (and some actual thunder and lightning) about it, but they were generally the better side. VAR ruled out two Germany and one Denmark goals — all correctly (even if some by hilariously tiny margins) — while also awarding the home nation a rather weak penalty to open the scoring (for real) in this game. (Blame the silly handball rules for that one, I guess.) Jamal Musiala then scored a wonderful goal to seal the deal for the hosts.
