Young sensation Joao Fonseca scripted history at the Buenos Aires Open, as he became the youngest ever to win an ATP singles title from South America. The Brazilian stunned local favourite and 26th ranked Francisco Cerundolo, to lift his maiden ATP title, in Argentina.
The teenager is also the eighth youngest in ATP Tour history to win a title with the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz ahead of him on the list. The Brazilian has been building up to this moment for a while.

He garnered global attention at the Australian Open 2025, where he overcame a tough qualifying group, without dropping a set. In his Grand Slam debut, Fonseca was set to play his first round against 10th seed Andrey Rublev.
However, this challenging match-up did not disturb the Brazilian as he stormed past the Russian in straight sets to script one of the greatest upsets in tennis history. In his path to ultimate glory, Joao Fonesca defeated some of the best players competing in the event including eighth seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry, Mariano Navone, Laslo Djere and ultimately Cerundolo in the finale.
Fonseca started the 2025 season ranked No. #145, a remarkable rise from No. #730 just 12 months earlier, and he soared another 31 places on Monday to reach a career-high ranking of #68.

The teenager had 409 points on at the start of the year, and then won the ATP Challenger event in Canberra. Additionally, the Brazilian reached second round of the Australian Open, despite starting as a qualifier and hence, was on 600 points before the Argentina tournament.
The Buenos Aires Open is an ATP 250 tournament so 250 points were on offer for the winner and 165 for the runner-up. As the winner of the event, Fonseca earned the maximum—250 and currently sits on 850 points.

As an ATP 250 competition, the prize money on offer for the champion is significantly lesser in comparison to an ATP 1000 or Grand Slam.
Advancing to the second round of the Happy Slam at the start of the year witnessed the Brazilian fetch a massive $125,653. Joao Fonseca’s maiden ATP triumph in Argentina awarded him $100,160, while runner-up Cerundolo took home $58,420.
Fonseca has earned $251,440 so far in 2025, and his career earnings have surpassed the $1 million mark, now standing at $1,070,146. This highlights the greatness of the young Brazilian who has already accomplished so much, at such a tender age.
