One person was killed and at least 10 people were missing when a hotel collapsed in a coastal town in Argentina, South America.
Buenos Aires’ fire department said the 10-story Dubrovnik hotel building in the seaside resort of Villagesel suddenly collapsed with a roar at around 1 a.m. local time on the 29th.
In the aftermath of the collapse, the adjacent three-story building was also greatly damaged.Rescuers dispatched after receiving a report
found two people in the rubble, but one died.
A rescue team of more than 300 people, including firefighters from nearby areas, has mobilized search dogs to search for missing people, but at least 10 people are missing.
“As there are some foreign cases that have been rescued after surviving at the site of the collapse for more than a week, rescue efforts will continue until all missing people are found,” the city of Villahessel said.
Buenos Aires prosecutors say they have confirmed that the hotel, which was completed in 1986, was illegally expanding and remodeling work.
Prosecutors arrested four people, who were involved in the renovation of the building, Sheriff Javier Alonso said in a news release.
“The hotel was secretly carrying out construction without complying with city regulations and without authorities’ permission,” Villahessel city authorities said, adding that the construction had been suspended by the city in August.
