Who will win Copa America?

I know the feeling. You’ve only just convinced your partner to let you watch three Euros games a day and now you’ll have to tell them you’ll be watching more football overnight too.

The biggest footballing party in the Americas is upon us meaning it’s time to shed light on the most important question – who will win Copa America?

Argentina are undoubtedly the favourites. Lionel Messi has spent the late stage of his career claiming the biggest international honours and he is far from done.

The 36-year-old will be looking to claim a historic third major international honour in three years having won the Copa in 2021 and the World Cup a year later.

Messi, of course, is the star of the tournament but he isn’t the only asset at Lionel Scaloni’s disposal.

The Argentines have a monstrous squad which includes the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Alexis MacAllister, Rodrigo De Paul, Julian Alvarez, Alejandro Garnacho, Lautaro Martinez and even the experienced Angel Di Maria.

Brazil are currently the second-favourites and, on paper, they have a team to match their long-standing rivals.

Their squad includes Alisson, Danilo, Eder Militao, Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bruno Guimaraes, Lucas Paqueta, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Raphinha and even Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli.

Trouble is, the Brazilians have really struggled when it comes to manifesting all those pieces into one cohesive footballing machine.

Brazil legend Ronaldinho came out with scathing comments about his former national side, calling it one of the ‘worst’ Brazilian teams in recent years.

If you are looking for a credible challenger, Uruguay may be a better option.

La Celeste are a rejuvenated side since Marcelo Bielsa stepped into the managerial hotseat.

The former Leeds United boss has already masterminded wins over Argentina and Brazil during World Cup qualifiers.

With Panama, Bolivia and the USA in their group, we’re expecting Uruguay to fly into the knockout stages and provide plenty of problems for the other two big hitters.

In terms of other possible outsiders, hosts USA are available at around the 12/1 mark. Then again, Gregg Berhalter’s men have endured some difficult results in the lead-up to the tournament – including a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Colombia.

With that in mind, our recommendation is to back Argentina in the outright market. But if you’re looking for the next best thing, Uruguay is the way to go.
