Bad Monkey risked the ire of residents by erecting a “hideous eyesore” of a set, but it follows an unfortunate trend in the state of Florida.

Taking place around the Florida Keys, Miami and the Bahamas, Apple TV+’s irreverent new crime drama follows disgraced detective Andrew Yancy (played by Vince Vaughn) who unravels a never-ending mystery when a severed arm is reeled in by tourists.

Despite being relegated to food safety inspection, when he teams up with medical examiner Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) and friend and fellow detective Rogelio Burton (John Ortiz) to dig up more dirt he begins to uncover a vast conspiracy that threatens to decimate Florida’s stunning natural environment.

While all this is going on, Yancy is appalled when a bright yellow house is built right next door by an upstart real estate developer Evan Shook (Alex Moffat) who hopes to make a killing.

Yancy does everything he can to sabotage Evan’s potential sales, and Bill teases he had a lot of “personal satisfaction” with how this subplot wraps up.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he explained: “All of Carl’s books have to have an environmentalist thread running through them.

“He’s big about it and he’s a huge mainstay in Florida, culturally, not only as an author but he was an award-winning journalist for the Miami Herald.

“He feels that development and real estate and construction has ruined what is one of the prettiest states in America and is constantly just absolutely ravaging it.

“So it was really important to him that we did that.”

Thankfully, the house seen in the series isn’t there to stay. In fact, the yellow exteriors were actually built around the foundations of another property that was in the middle of construction.

Despite eventually being torn down, Bill claims the headache-inducing, lemon-yellow monstrosity didn’t go down well with locals who were distraught to have their view of the beach ruined.

“The house next door… there is a modest house, a framework that was being built that we gave them money to say, ‘Can we put up this hideous eyesore all around it?’” he said.

“Without a doubt, some of the locals, especially ones going by in boats, could not have been more horrified.” However, some Floridians have grown used to questionable real estate ventures by now.

“But it’s not an anomaly,” Bill continued. “You go around Florida, and my mum’s family is entrenched there, and what used to be small and quaint beach communities, you run into these McMansions.

“These silly things of excess that are just ravaging the coastline.”

As for this particular blot on the beach, Bill concludes: “The neighbourhood didn’t like it and they were glad when it was gone.”

Bad Monkey debuts with two episodes on August 14 on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday.
