Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) is setting its sights on expanding U.S. connectivity by targeting cities with significant untapped demand for travel to the Bahamas.
The airport’s leadership has identified several key U.S. markets—including Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; Pittsburgh; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; St. Louis; Minneapolis; and Cleveland—as potential new destinations to strengthen its position as the primary gateway to the islands.
“The U.S. remains our primary source market, and we see tremendous potential in these cities to expand air service and capture new demand,” Nassau Airport Development Company President and CEO Vernice Walkine told Aviation Week ahead of Routes Americas 2025, taking place in Nassau & Paradise Island from Feb. 10-12.
She also noted that these routes would not only boost tourism, but also facilitate stronger economic ties between the Bahamas and the U.S.
In addition to expanding U.S. connectivity, NAS is exploring new opportunities in Latin America and Europe. While the airport currently offers service to Panama in the region, Walkine emphasized the potential to build on this foundation and introduce additional routes to meet growing demand from international markets.
Additionally, a major focus is attracting more point-to-point routes, which allow airlines to operate flights outside of peak hours typically tied to major hub connections. “As an airport, we are prepared to offer incentives for that kind of flexibility,” Walkine added.
NAS also continues to prioritize inter-Caribbean connections, maintaining regular service to Cuba, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Turks and Caicos. While service to Haiti has been temporarily paused due to political instability, Walkine reaffirmed the airport’s commitment to strengthening regional connectivity where demand exists.
“Our approach to air service development involves working closely with airlines to identify and respond to demand,” Walkine said. “This ensures that we not only meet current travel needs, but also position the Bahamas for long-term success.”
As the main gateway to the Bahamas, NAS saw passenger volumes reach 4.06 million in the airport’s 2024 financial year, setting a new record for the hub. While fiscal 2025 may not exceed these historic levels, NAS recorded a 2.3% increase in calendar year 2024 passenger numbers, totaling 4.026 million.
