PM recommends Shanta Knowles as next COP | News

Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis has recommended Assistant Commissioner of Police Shanta Knowles to be the next commissioner of police following the resignation of Clayton Fernander.

“She is a strong and season professional ready to lead the force through an era of substantial reform,” Davis said during a national statement.

If the prime minister’s recommendation is accepted, Knowles would become the first female commissioner of police in the force’s history.

Knowles, who has been a member of the Royal Bahamas Police Force for the more than three decades, currently has responsibility for Grand Bahama and the Northern Bahamas.

Fernander, who has served as police commissioner since July 2022, resigned amid allegations that members of Bahamian law enforcement were engaged in a conspiracy to ship cocaine into The Bahamas and the United States.

The claims are contained in a US indictment, which was filed in New York, was unsealed last week. Eleven Bahamians, including a chief superintendent, a police sergeant and a Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) chief petty officer, and two Colombians are charged with conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States, possession and use of firearms, and firearms conspiracy.

It is alleged that the group facilitated the transshipment of tons of cocaine from South America through The Bahamas and ultimately into the United States.

It alleges that Chief Superintendent Elvis Curtis, who supervised airport locations throughout The Bahamas, including Lynden Pindling International Airport, the country’s largest airport, abused his position in exchange for “cocaine-fueled bribes from drug traffickers and their confederates”.
