Rashad Sweeting made history as he becomes the first player from the Bahamas to compete in the Paddy Power World Darts Championship for the 2024/25 season. This milestone marks a significant achievement not only for Sweeting but also for the sport of darts in the Bahamas.
Sweeting secured his place through the Championship Darts Latin America and Caribbean CDLC Order of Merit, having won two of the four events held in 2024.
Reflecting on this achievement, Sweeting said “It’s a great feeling to be known as the first Bahamian player in darts to make it to the professional dart corporation. It’s a dream of mine. I remember telling a veteran player how I was going to become the best player in the country make the top 5 and the national team, but it was always God’s timing. I always knew it in my gut. In the upcoming competition, I am going to stay focused and do me because the competition level will increase, but one of my main objectives is to get the country to know that darts is a real big thing like any other sport.”
Sweeting’s path to the championship began with his strong performance in the CDLC events. The opening weekend took place in Jamaica in July, where Sweeting claimed a title alongside Guyana’s Norman Madhoo, who topped the 2023 standings. Sweeting continued as he secured the top spot on the final weekend of action in Santiago, Chile, in early October.
During the third event in Santiago, Sweeting showcased his skills with a commanding 6-1 victory over Sudesh Fitzgerald, doubling his title tally for 2024. Although he was denied back-to-back titles on the following day by Chile’s Guillermo Soto, who came from behind to win 6-5, Sweeting’s performances were enough to keep him at the top of the standings.
The final standings were close, with just two points separating Fitzgerald, Soto, and Madhoo. However, Sweeting maintained a 16-point lead at the summit, securing his place in the World Darts Championship.
As he prepares to compete on the world stage as a professional , Sweeting’s focus remains on raising the profile of darts in the Bahamas and showcasing the talent the country has to offer.
